Geocache Description:

Return to Ring Hill Forest

Site of the feast, now this forest has fallen on the lean times. Ring Hill Forest is named for its early owner Tom Ring, the operator of T.M. Ring Logging Company in Duvall at the turn of the century. It is believed that Ring established his logging operation in 1911 in what is now Ring Hill Forest. The old growth timber was logged at this time. Between 1962 and 1965 the area was logged again by the Siler Logging Company, who created the network of old logging roads that can be found today. It appears that only the high value and volume trees were harvested at this time, leaving undersized, deformed and diseased trees behind. The land was purchased in 1997 and 1998 for a total of $3.5 million dollars by King County and will be managed for long term timber production. Recent surveys have discovered large areas of western hemlock infected with dwarf mistletoe. It was decided to accelerate the initial harvest in the northern portion of the forest to remove the stands of infected trees in the attempt to develop a healthier forest environment. Eventually the logged areas will be replanted with dwarf mistletoe resistant trees such as cedar and pine.

Edit 2-19-09 There is now a trail that runs to within 30 feet of the cache. The trail can be found on your left as you enter the logged portion of the area and runs around the cleared area. Dropping the Terrain Rating as a result.
