Geocache Description:

First of a planned series highlighting some historic locations along Quinpool Road.

One of the busiest and most complicated intersections in Halifax is home to and named after the willow tree which grows in the middle of Quinpool Road where it ends at Robie Street.

I had always been told as a child that the original Willow Tree was a cutting given to the city by Queen Victoria, but have been unable to verify the accuracy of that story.

According to a newspaper article, dated October 10, 1967, the original Willow Tree was “believed to have been planted in the early 18th century.”

Another article, dated May 14, 1956, states that the original Willow Tree was in very poor condition, so shoots were taken from the tree with the intention of using one of them as a replacement.

A third article, dated July 5, 1988, mentions that Princess Margaret planted one of the mature shoots, sometimes referred to as the “second Willow Tree,” on August 11, 1958 “during the last day of a hectic month-long tour of Canada”. The article goes on to say that the second Willow Tree also succumbed to traffic and exhaust fumes and was replaced in May 1988 with a sapling from that tree.

For the FTF, the cache originally held a maple leaf pin made from the old copper sheathing from the Parliament Buildings.

I had to relocate the cache and make it a micro, as the HRM Parks people cut down the shrubbery in the original hiding spot. I've put it back as close to the original spot as I could manage.
