Karhusaaren paviljonki oli 1930-luvulla Karhusaareen rakennettu
ulkoilmaravintola. Paviljonki olikin 1940-50 -luvulla kaupungin
suosituimpia huvittelupaikkoja. Kulku Karhusaareen hoitui saaren ja
Lappeenrannan sataman väliä risteilevillä laivoilla. Karhusaaren
paviljongin suosio kuitenkin laantui 1960-luvulla ja
ravintolatoiminnan loputtua rakennus pääsi vähitellen ränsistymään.
Viimeinen naula paviljongin arkkuun oli retkeilijöiden nuotiosta
syttynyt tulipalo, joka tuhosi rakennuksen täysin. Muistona yli
viidenkymmenen vuoden takaisesta loistosta on enää ravintolan
kivijalka, kattopeltiä ja nyt tämä kätkö
.
Kätkön terrain-luokitus on kesäisin 5, koska tarvitset veneen
tai kanootin päästäksesi saareen. Talvella saareen pääsee helposti
jääreittejä pitkin joko Pikisaaresta tai satamasta (kts.
waypointit). Tällöin terrain-luokitus on jotain 2,5:n ja 3:n
väliltä riippuen hieman lumen määrästä. Talvella saaren kallioilla
liikkuessa kannattaa olla varovainen. Lumen alla oleva kallio on
sileää ja todella liukasta.
Itse kätkö on lock 'n lock boksi johon normaalikokoiset
geokolikot ja travel bugit mahtuvat mainiosti.
Saaresta löytyy myös Etelä-Karjalan virkistysaluesäätiön
ylläpitämä hieno laavu (kts. waypointit)
tulentekomahdollisuuksineen (puita löytyy) ja
kompostorikäymälöineen.
The Paviljonki of Karhusaari (Karhusaari is literally translated
Bear Island) was an outdoor restaurant built in the 1930s. It
experienced its glory days in 1940-50 when it was immensely popular
among the people of Lappeenranta. People were transported to
Karhusaari by boats cruising back and forth from the marina of
Lappeenranta. The popularity took a nose dive in the 1960s, the
place got deserted and little by little it got into bad shape. The
Paviljonki met its end in 1978 when it was caught on fire from a
camper's fire and got burnt to the ground. Today the only remains
of its glory are the foundations, pieces of the roof and now this
cache
.
The terrain level of this cache is 5 during the summer time,
because you need a boat or a canoe to get on the island. During the
winter time you can get to the island easily by foot on the frozen
lake. The routes on ice start from Pikisaari and the marina (see
waypoints). During winter the terrain rating is something between
2,5 and 3 depending on the amount of snow. Note that during the
winter you should be extra careful when walking on the rocks of the
island. The rock under the snow is smooth and very slippery.
The cache itself is a lock 'n lock container. It's big enough to
house standard sized geocoins and TBs.
The island has some camping facilities provided by the
South-Carelian recreational area foundation: a shelter with a
fireplace (wood available) and a toilet.
