Dr. Ivan Getting, otec GPS
Globálny
pozicný systém GPS bol predpovedaný a vynájdený Dr. Ivanom
Gettingom a Ministerstvom obrany Spojených štátov v 50-tych rokoch
20-teho storocia. V 70-tych rokoch bol rozbehnutý GPS projekt
vedený Dr. Parkinsonom, ktorý bol založený na pôvodných ideách Dr.
Ivana Gettinga. V roku 1978 GPS systém bol už funkcný a v
prevádzke.
GPS systém sa
skladá z najmenej 24 satelitov, ktoré obiehajú Zem na obežnej dráhe
raz za 12 hodín. Každý satelit vysiela špeciálny kódovaný signál,
ktorý je spracovaný GPS prijímacom a ktorý tak môže vypocítat
pozíciu, rýchlost a cas. Satelitné dráhy sú usporiadané tak, že
najmenej šest satelitov je v dosahu z ktoréhokolvek miesta na Zemi.
Satelity sú umiestnené na obežnej dráhe vo výške približne 20200
kilometrov.
Ivan Getting,
cestný prezident spolocnosti Aerospace Corp., bol jeden z prvých
dizajnérov navigacného systému na báze satelitnej navigácie, ktorý
bol predchodcom GPS. Narodil sa 18. januára 1912 v New York City v
rodine slovenských imigrantov z Bytce, vyrástol však v Pittsburgu v
Pennsylvánii a študoval na Oxfordskej univerzite. Bol ocenený
viacerými cenami, medzi tie najvýznamnejsie patria Draper prize a
Navy Superior Public Service Award ocenenia. Jeho otec pracoval
spolu s Masarykom a Benešom pocas 1. svetovej vojny na založení
prvého Ceskoslovenského štátu. V tejto dobe (1919) strávil rok v
Bratislave.
Jeden z GPS
satelitov (GPS 2R-11) bol venovaný Dr. Ivanovi Gettingovi, co
pripomína pamätná doska, umiestnená na satelite, s vyrytými
slovami, ktoré používal pri opise jeho vízie satelitnej navigácie:
"Majáky na oblohe slúžiace
celému ludstvu / Lighthouses in the Sky Serving All
Mankind".

The Global
Positioning System GPS was originally envisioned and invented by
Dr. Ivan Getting and by the U.S. Department of Defense in the
1950’s. In the 1970's run the GPS program led by Dr. Parkinson
which was based on original ideas of Ivan Getting. By 1978 the GPS
system was already functional.
The GPS
Operational Constellation consists of at least 24 satellites that
orbit the Earth in 12 hours. Each GPS satellite provides specially
coded satellite signals that can be processed by a GPS receiver,
which can compute position, velocity, and time. The orbits are
arranged so that at least six satellites are always within line of
sight from almost everywhere on Earth's surface. Satellites are
orbiting at an altitude of approximately 20,200
kilometers.
Ivan Getting,
president emeritus of the Aerospace Corp., was an early designer
and proponent of satellite-based navigation systems which led to
the development and deployment of the GPS. He was born on 18
January, 1912 in New York City to family of Slovak immigrants from
Bytca and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and studied at Oxford
University and was also awarded by Draper prize and by Navy
Superior Public Service Award. His father had worked with Masaryk
and Benes in WWI to set up Czechoslovak state. He had spent a
year in Bratislava in 1919.
One of GPS
satellites (GPS 2R-11) has attached an engraved plate inscribed
with the words Dr. Ivan Getting used to describe his vision for the
GPS constellation:
"Lighthouses in the Sky
Serving All
Mankind".
