Nederlandse versie.

English version.

In the distant past the banks of the Meuse river have been forests, lasting until the early middle ages. Remains of these prehistoric like forests have been discovered recently near Stevensweert. Dozens of trunks have been dug out. These trunks have been dated back to 400-600 A.D. and therefore must be some 1400-1600 years of age. In those days they must have been carried by the flow of the Meuse and aftwerwards covered by sand and gravel, as a result of which they have been preserved in the very good condition they are today. It concerns giant poplars, willows and oak trees, providing clear insight into the composition of natural riparian zones. From the gravel breach lakes near Meers, an even older tree has been dug out: 4430 years ago this tree was standing at the banks of the Meuse river. Cooperating nature organisations have come up with the idea of reerecting these trees at the start of the so called "Grensmaasproject" near Meers. They will be presented as a gift to those involved with the pilot, to celebrate the return of the riparian zone.

I have passed the nearby motorway so many times, but I would never have guessed that there is such an interesting site so close. Thus I have learned something new. And the next time I had passed the motorway, I had a close look - and I could see the "trees". Nice to know this place.

Logging, however was not that easy: I had to avoid quite some horse dumpings (which I actually did not completely avoided - so the remains are still on the soles of my sneakers). Then, as I was there alone, I had to try to get myself onto the picture. I succeeded - somehow.

Best Regards
Thofol
