First cache in the "Poplar Creek Bike Trail" series. It's a standard ammo can in an area that is more prairie than woods.

I noticed that the Poplar Creek Bike Trail doesn't really have many caches nearby that are easily accessible from the trail - so I thought I'd start adding a few. The goal of the series is encourage folks to get out on the trail, by bike or on foot, and enjoy this nice forest preserve, rather than just going for park'n'grabs.
The hides are not all quick bike'n'grabs, though, and in the summer you can expect to have to wade through some tall grasses and/or somewhat scratchy undergrowth, so dress accordingly (bike shorts may not be the ideal attire).

This first cache is placed in an area along the northern part of the trail. The landscape here is mostly prairie at this point. If you look on the satellite image you can clearly see rectangles with lines of trees separating them - I guess there used to be fields here, similar to the corn fields further south along the trail. Nowadays only the deer, birds and small animals harvest there, though.
This part of the trail (between Higgins/Shoe Factory Rd and Bartlett Rd) shows on maps as Old Higgins Road.

The cache is a standard ammo can, traditional hide, nothing fancy. About 130 feet of bushwhacking from the trail.
As far as I know there is no legal street parking nearby. The closest trail parking lots are at the corner of Higgins and Shoe Factory Rd, and at the corner of Shoe Factory Rd and Sutton Rd (Rt 59).

If you decide to ride your bike around the trail, check out my Bike'N'Bench Loop cache, which will take you around the whole 8.9-mile loop.
