Questa multi-cache vi porterà a spasso per il centro di Pisa sulle orme del conte Ugolino, la cui vicenda fu superbamente rappresentata da Dante nel XXXIII canto dell'Inferno. Il conte Ugolino della Gherardesca fu un uomo politico pisano di parte guelfa che ebbe notevole rilievo nella Pisa ghibellina del XIII secolo. L'aristocratico Ugolino, dopo la dura sconfitta subita dai pisani alla Meloria per mano genovese (a cui egli stesso partecipò), prese il potere nella sua città. L'atteggiamento accomodante verso le potenti Lucca e Firenze (a cui cedette vari castelli di confine per frenare possibili aggressioni) decretò probabilmente il suo destino. Alcune famiglie pisane (capitanate dall'arcivescovo Ruggieri, capofazione ghibellino) ebbero gioco facile ad accusarlo di tradimento: venne destituito e imprigionato insieme a figli e nipoti nella Torre della Muda, dove tutti furono rinchiusi per nove mesi ed infine crudelmente lasciati a morire di fame. Fin qui la storia: la leggenda, come Dante lascia intendere ("poscia, più che 'l dolor, poté il digiuno"), vuole che il conte si sia addirittura cibato della carne dei propri congiunti. Tuttavia, studi recenti compiuti sui resti di Ugolino sembrano definitivamente escludere episodi di cannibalismo. Nientedimeno Dante lo colloca tra i traditori della patria e del partito, e lo condanna a mangiare eternamente la testa del suo acerrimo nemico, l'arcivescovo Ruggieri, al fine di saziare per sempre quella fame che lo condusse alla morte.

STAGE 1
Al waypoint iniziale N 43° 43.121' E 010° 24.359' vi trovate nel sagrato della semplice ed elegante chiesa di San Francesco, in cui sono contenute le spoglie del conte Ugolino e dei suoi figli. Se è aperta approfittatene per fare un giro all'interno ed affacciarvi nel bel chiostro. Poi contate il numero W di colonnine di marmo bianco sopravvissute (cioè intere) che circondano il sagrato, ed il numero X di scudi araldici sulla facciata della casa addossata al fianco destro della chiesa.
STAGE 2
Dirigetevi poi al waypoint N 43° 43.177' E 010° 23.996'. Siete di fronte ad un edificio con un arco, che sorge proprio sui resti della Torre della Muda, ove trovò la morte Ugolino. Sulla facciata di questo edificio trovate una lapide che ricorda la storia di Ugolino della Gherardesca: l'ultima parola è di Y lettere. Sotto l’arco invece trovate il cartello “ARCO DEI ……”: l’ultima parola è di Z lettere.

La cache è una piccola scatola nascosta vicino le spallette dell'Arno (non bisogna scendere al fiume), in ogni caso evitate la ricerca durante le piene del fiume e siate discreti. Una recente ordinanza vieta poi di camminare lungo gli argini e le relative passerelle! Contenuto originale: logbook. Serve penna o matita!
Dalla cache potrete ammirare i lungarni e notare una particolarità nella selva di palazzi... a dimostrazione che i pisani non dimenticano coloro che considerano traditori! Infatti vi è un solo unico giardino direttamente affacciato sui lungarni. Lì sorgeva la dimora di Ugolino: fu distrutta e la terra fu maledetta con divieto perpetuo di ricostruzione!

This multi-cache will guide you in the center of Pisa on the traces of Count Ugolino, whose history was superbly represented by Dante Alighieri in the XXXIII canto of The Inferno. The Count Ugolino della Gherardesca was a Guelph commander and politician who lived in Pisa (where the Ghibellines were predominant) during the XIII century. The noble Ugolino, after the total defeat of Pisa at La Meloria against Genoa (in which he took part), took the lead in his city. His accommodating behavior toward the powerful Lucca and Florence (to which he donated several castles along the border) much probably decreed his unlucky fate. Some opponent families in Pisa (lead by the Arcibishop Ruggieri, a Ghibelline chief) could easily charge him of treachery: he was deposed and imprisoned together with his sons and grandsons in the Torre della Muda, where they were all detained for nine months, and then cruelly starved to death. The history stops here, and the legend begins: Dante seems to ambiguously state ("later, the hunger proved stronger than grief") that Ugolino went mad and even devoured the corpses of his relatives. However, recent studies on the remains of Ugolino and his children proved that no cannibalism had occurred. Nevertheless Dante places Ugolino in the Inferno among the traitors of country and party, and dooms him to eternally gnaw at the skull of his fiercest enemy and betrayer, the Arcibishop Ruggieri, aimed at eventually satisfying his deadly hunger.

STAGE 1
At the beginning, i.e., N 43° 43.121' E 010° 24.359', you are in front of the unelaborate and elegant church of San Francesco, where the remains of the Count Ugolino and his sons are buried. If it is open, please have a look at the interior and at the cloister. Then count the number W of surviving (i.e., not broken) marble columns surrounding the church square, and the number X of heraldic shields on the façade of the house on the right hand side of the church.
STAGE 2
Then go to N 43° 43.177' E 010° 23.996'. You are in front of a building with an arch, rising exactly on where the Torre della Muda, i.e. the deadly prison of Ugolino, stood. On the façade of this building there is a plaque mentioning the history of Ugolino della Gherardesca: the very last word is Y letter long. Under the arch there is another plaque stating “ARCO DEI ……”: the very last word is Z letter long.

The cache is a little box located along Arno river banks (no need to descend to the river), nevertheless please avoid to search it when the river is in spate, and be stealthy in your hunt. Please notice that a recent municipal ordinance forbids to walk along the banks or on the attached catwalk! Original content: logbook only. A pen or pencil is needed!
From the cache location you will notice a peculiarity among the buildings along the Arno river, and you will understand... that people in Pisa hardly forget who is considered a traitor. Indeed there is just one garden facing the Arno. Ugolino palace stood there: it was demolished and the ground was damned with a perpetual rebuilding prohibition!
