After reaching the border of Nemetbanya, at the roundabout turn in direction of Gesztenyes, then follow the road until you see a tree signed with a "Z". Turn right, then after ~900 meters, turn left, and follow the GPS.
The first markings of dinosaurs in Hungary were found in 1966, they were footprints hidden in a coal mine in Mecsek Mountains. Until 2000 it was the only archeological finding in about dinosaurs in Hungary.
About 86 million years ago, most of Hungary was hidden by sea. At this time, the Bakony Mountains were the part of the continent.
The occurrence were the part of the coastal line, the clime was subtropical. A fast flood took the logs and the bodies of the dinosaurs to that coastal line, and left it there, just like floods leaving rubbish on the quays nowadays.
The bones were found in a small area like mentioned above, it’s only 50 sq. meters.
That ground layer is hidden deep under the surface, so the 140 meters deep Bauxite mine helped a lot to find the bones of the most common dinosaur of that area, the Hungarosaurus.
It was an unknown genus before. It was 4 meters long, and had a skin covered with ridges and pricks like fins of sharks. The archeologists diagnosed that the animal were trampled by other animals before finally got hidden.
The other finding of paleontologist Attila Osi is Bakonydraco (flying reptile, pretosaurus). It had 3-3.5 meters wing-spread, had no teeth, and ate fishes, arthropods, and molluscs.
The mine will be filled, only the place of the bones will be kept clear. There will be a visitor center with much pathway, some bones could be viewed in the rocks.
The entrance is closed by a barrier, after closing it around 6 pm; it’s difficult to get out. You mustn’t go inside the mine! It’s too dangerous…
