You must be logged in with a Geocaching.com account to view the specific location of this geocache. It's free!
A somewhat challenging walk is rewarded by terrific caldera views.
Trail is readily visible & accessible from Imerovigli area.
The cache is near the Skaros rock formation which juts out to the
sea. If you hike towards the highest, stop near stone steps and
look in the direction of the small town of Oiu. The cache is a
small plastic container with log book and trade item. Take
something to sign the log.
A bit of History
This rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress and
castle constructed there offered protection from pirates. Volcanic
eruptions and earthquakes had a huge impact.
In fact, Skaros was the capital of Santorini until the 18th
century, although evacuation of Skaros started at the beginning of
the 17th century. The rich Roman Catholics who had once lived there
had moved to the town of Fira, abandoning the castle for a lower
flatter level with access to the sea. If you brave the climb to the
highest point you'll see some ruins of the old fortress.
The rock is uninhabited with the exception of a small church, the
Chapel of Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis, on its north side.
Placed in honor of my father, Bill, who can never resist seeking
out the best views.
