A scenic uphill walk on an old logging trail following the Lachlan River as it passes through a steep gorge.
You will need to drive through Lachlan and turn RIGHT at the junction of Lachlan Road and Hydehurst Rd. After driving a further 1.8km turn left into an unsigned road and park at the parking spot as directed to find the cache, "Cascades at Black Glen" (GC1B61M). After fording the river and finding that cache, note the pink tape and follow the track upriver for another 50m to a second crossing point.
The track then runs through an old overgrown clearing beside the river before climbing steeply uphill following a disused logging trail. It has a few sharp turns but the path is well marked with pink tape. At the top it crosses another old clearing and continues back down to the river from the southern end of the clearing. The river here has cut a gorge 60m deep and drops through a series of waterfalls and rapids.
Be aware that this walk has some steep drops around so take care with kids.
I found satellite coverage to be very ordinary so please take the hint and if you can get better coordinates please list them and I will update them.
The cache is a cammoed screwtop container and contains stashnote, logbook etc a assortment of swaps and another of Dippy’s favourite recipes – the Tzatziki Dip from the Dips and Dippers event earlier in the year.
Once the cache has been found and logged, I prefer to return the same way (as it’s nice near the river) but if you would like to do a circuit you can take an alternative track which heads off to the east and slightly uphill from the top clearing. It’s not so well marked, but we followed it relatively easily, and it emerges 50m on the other side of the car park.
