Forerunner of Hokkaido University, first vice-principal, William Smith Dr. Clark of the Sapporo agricultural school preached Christianity and reclamation mind and gave students big influence.

The gentle rising and falling green tract of lands from the place that passed the south gate to the left hand since I enter to Hokkaido University Chuuo St. call the front gate with center loan, and there are 12,000 square meters in area. Negative contrast lets the bright green of the lawn become more attractive with sunlight to shed from the grove, and it is it with the one of the areas symbolizing gathering Hokkaido University campus of Hokkaido University student in the summer.

At the northwest corner of the central loan, there is the William S Clark bust which is the one of the symbols of Hokkaido University. The first generation of this Clark bust was produced by the collection from the Hokkaido University inside and outside as a part of the 50th anniversary Hokkaido University wound basis memory business (1926) in 1926 by sculptor Sekiro Tajima . It is the designer of the Hokkaido University botanical garden, and, to a pedestal, huge water lily - Victoria regia of the Amazon autochthonism which was a chance that Dr. Clark becomes a botanist / an agriculturist by the suggestion of first director and Kingo Miyabe that it was it is designed with a signature of BOYS BE AMBITIOUS (Boys, be ambitious) of too famous Dr. Clark. However, in 1943, the first bust has been melted down by metal collection law in the Pacific Wars. The current bust was cast again soon after the war in 1948 by sculptor Kensei Kato. Mr.Tajima had already died, but, fortunately, a model by a thing of making was stored in those days in Sapporo independence church. An unveiling ceremony is held on October 8, 1948 and reaches it at the present.
I was able to consist of Clark images a little, and there is the cache.

正門を入ってから南門を左手に過ぎたところから北大中央通りまでのなだらかな起伏をしている緑地は、中央ローンと呼ばれ、面積12,000平方メートルあります。夏は、木立からこぼれる日差しと陰のコントラストが芝生の鮮やかな緑を引き立たせ、北大生の集う北大キャンパスを象徴する区域の１つとなっています。

中央ローンの北西角には、北大の象徴の１つであるウィリアム・Ｓ ・クラーク胸像があります。このクラーク胸像の初代は、大正15年（1926）北大創基50周年記念事業の一環として、北大内外からの拠金によって、彫刻家田嶼碩郎氏によって制作されたものです。台座には、あまりにも有名であるクラーク博士のBOYS BE AMBITIOUS （少年よ、大志を抱け）の銘とともに、北大植物園の設計者であり初代園長となった宮部金吾の発案で、クラーク博士が植物学者・農学者となるきっかけとなったアマゾン原産の巨大なスイレン―ヴィクトリア・レギアがデザインされています。しかし、昭和18年、太平洋戦争中の金属回収令によって、初代の胸像は鋳つぶされてしまいました。現在の胸像は、戦後まもなく昭和23年、彫刻家加藤顕清によって再鋳造されたものです。当時、田嶼氏は既に亡くなっていましたが、幸いなことに、作成の際の原型が札幌独立教会に保存されてありました。昭和23年10月８日に除幕式が行われ、現在に至っています。

November 9 by hogehopo (80 found) It visited by the recreational travel of the office. Because there was free time during a day, they are the rental bicycles and the third of cash hunting eyes of the Sapporo city. August 28 by jcsjcs2 (206 found) Easy find, even without the hint. Cache is in perfect condition. I dipped a couple of GCs but decided against leaving them because there are only about 3 visitors per year. The GC's owner might not be too happy to have their items stranded here for an extended period of time. I'll upload a picture of the "family". While it does show the cache, it doesn't reveal its location, nor will it be helpful in locating the cache... TFTC! [view this log] The GC&TB family in Hokkaido
