A Igreja
Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Atalaia foi edificada no
Séc.
XVI e reedificada no Séc. XVIII. Situada no
cimo da povoação da Atalaia, a 4km do Montijo, o Santuário domina
todo o espaço à sua volta.
A igreja deve ter
sido fundada em 1507 na sequência de uma promessa dos trabalhadores
da Alfândega de Lisboa por ocasião de um surto de peste.
Inicialmente supõe-se que devesse existir uma pequena ermida, a
qual foi sofrendo várias campanhas de obras desde o século XVII até
ao século XX.
O edifício da
igreja é antecedido por um alpendre delimitado por três arcos de
pedra com gradeamento de ferro entre eles. Ao alpendre corresponde
o coro no interior da igreja. A igreja tem uma única nave, com
coro, sendo o púlpito de mármore da Arrábida.
A
igreja tem três altares. O altar-mor possui um belo retábulo
setecentista de madeira do Brasil, encimado por dois anjos que
sustentam as armas reais. Este retábulo enquadra uma imagem de
Nossa Senhora da Atalaia. Os altares laterais são mais
recentes e actualmente com invocações diferentes das
originais. |

A igreja é forrada até cerca de 1/3 da sua altura com azulejos
azuis e brancos do século XVIII, formando painéis historiados
representando cenas da vida da Virgem À frente da igreja estende-se
um grande adro seguido de uma escadaria de largos degraus. O adro e
a escadaria dão para um terreiro onde se ergue um belo cruzeiro
quinhentista, mandado construir pela Confraria de Lisboa.
Nas traseiras da igreja existe um eucaliptal que termina numa fonte
– a Fonte Santa -
onde, segundo a lenda, teria aparecido a imagem de Nossa Senhora da
Atalaia. Aí se realizam as lavagens simbólicas tradicionais durante
as principais romarias.
Este Santuário tem sido alvo de uma enorme devoção popular
manifestada no culto da água (Fonte Santa – Lavagens
Simbólicas). A festa em honra de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia, também
conhecida por “Festa Grande”, decorre no final de
Agosto.

Os pontos mais afastados (Cruzeiro – Fonte Santa) distam
entre sim cerca de 1 km. Poderão sempre optar por fazer o percurso
de carro, mas se estiver bom tempo torna-se agradável fazer o
passeio a pé, devendo estacionar o cachemobil onde é sugerido.
Alerto que a água da fonte é imprópria para consumo, caso tenham
sede podem beber de uma torneira situada no parque da fonte, no
lado esquerdo quando se entra, com água potável da rede.

The
Sanctuary Church of Nossa Senhora da Atalaia was built in XVI century and rebuilt in
XVIII century. Located at the
top of the village of Atalaia, for 4 km
way from Montijo, the Sanctuary
dominates the entire space around them.
The
church must have been founded in 1507 following a promise employee
of the customs in Lisbon during a plague. Initially there
was a small chapel that has been suffering various works of
transformation. The church has a porch of
three arcs of stone with iron railing between them. The porch is
the choir inside the church. The church is a single nave, with
choir, and the marble pulpit of the Arrábida.
The
church has 3 altars. The high-altar has a fine retable eighteenth of wood from Brazil, ended by
two angels that support real weapons. This

The laterals altars are more recent and currently with different
invocations of the original.
The church is lined up to about 1/3 of its height, with blue and
white tiles of the XVIII century, forming a pictures representing
any memorable event representing scenes from the life of the
Virgin.
In the front of the church extends to a large churchyard followed
by a long staircase of steps. The churchyard and staircase to come
to a yard where is raised a beautiful cinquecentist monument cross,
building warrant for Confraria de
Lisboa.
At the back of the church there is a eucalyptus plantation ending a
fountain - A Fonte Santa - where,
according to legend, would have appeared the image of Nossa Senhora
da Atalaia.
There still are held the traditional symbolic lavage during the main processions.
This Sanctuary has been the target of a huge popular devotion
expressed in the worship of water (Fonte Santa – symbolic lavage).

This
multi-cache will take you on a visit of the most important points
of the Atalaia Sanctuary. The most
distant points (Monument Cross - Fountain) are approximately 1 km
apart. You may choose to drive but I advise you to take a stroll if
the weather is good. In the latter, park your cachemobil at the suggested point.
Note
that the water in non-drinkable and should you be thirsty, you
should only drink from the tap located in the left hand side within
the parking of the fountain that carries potable water from the
mains.
