Geocache Description:

At the war i 1864 between Prussia/Austria and Denmark, Denmark lost Slesvig, Holstein and Lauenburg and by that 2/5 of the country total size. The population was reduced from 2.6 mill. to 1.6 mill.
It was a heavy loss for Denmark, and the wish to win it all back was so high, that it in 1867 the government decided, that the half of the Danish army (10.000 man, and the double of the population in Viborg at the time ) every summer should be called in for exercise at Hald. In the course of May 1868 a white town rises for the first time at the moor like area. The camp had a impressing size. The infantry was placed between Hald and the road to Karup (A12). The artillery longer back against North on a open place in The Oak forest, about ½ a kilometer south from where the unit B is placed. The camp was a whole city of tents, nearly the double in size of Viborg, with camp streets alarm places, depots, post and telegraph station, jail, police and fire station.
The supplies to the 10.000 man were enormously, and it was good to the local business.
In the period 1874 to 1877 the crown prince Frederik (later king Frederik VIII) was commanding officer for the camp at Hald, and later there have been placed a monument in the forest at Hald Ege.
