A cache placed at the top of Mt Matthews by the Orongorongo Rover Scout Crew during there high peak chellange.
Located in the Rimataka Forest Park, high above the Orongorongo Valley. Mt Mattthews is Wellingtons highest peak and has fatastic views from the top.
The new map for this location is NZTopo50-BQ32 (Lower Hutt)
Topomap R27, R28 & Pt. Q27 Wellington map is a must, also warm gears and sturdy footware as this is not a trail for the faint hearted. (when placed it was snowing) Trail is only accessable from Orongorongo Valley, cache is placed at the summit of Mt Matthews at a height aprox 941m. Access via The Orongorongo track from Catchpool or the Whakanui track from Sunny Grove and Mt Matthews track and taking aprox 10hrs return. Or alternatively stay at one of th DOC huts in the Orongorongo valley. From the bottom of the Mt Matthews track/stream to the cache return will take aprox 5hrs. Cache not accessable during heavy rain as this area is a catchment area and crossing rivers will need to be made in order to get to the cache.
Access to Catchpool: Gates are open 8am-6pm during winter.

This cache has a 5 star "overall terrain rating" getting to it covers a massive distance, will invole river crossings, the area can have rapid weather changes and you will be following unmarked trails for alot of it, is very steep from the river to the summit.
The cache itself is a steel ammo box painted dark grey with geo-caching sticker.
