Iberochondrostoma lusitanicum is the scientific name of the Portuguese nase. It is a freshwater resident fish species, often reaching no more than 15 cm total length.

Distribution
Being a Portuguese endemic species, this taxon can only be found in national rivers and streams. Presently it is confined to the Tagus catchment, in particular to the tributaries of the lower main river course where some fragmented populations still exist at specific segments, to the West coastal catchments, to the Sado catchment and also to the small coastal catchments between the Rivers Sado and Mira.
Ecology
Little is known about the ecology of this species. It is mainly found in small low-flowing streams with some vegetation on the banks. Reproduction seems to occur between January and April. Others aspects of the ecology of this species, such as their trophic regime, are still unknown.
Threats
It is under considerable pressure from a range of anthropogenic activities, including habitat degradation, caused by water resource development schemes, particularly damming and water abstraction, modification of the natural flow regime, water quality degradation and introduction of exotic species. Geographic isolation caused by habitat degradation is particularly serious in the populations of the Tagus catchment and may cause the inevitable reduction in the species genetic diversity at short-term.
The cache
The goal of this cache is to introduce you to a freshwater fish species exclusively found on Portuguese rivers, which is critically endangered due to the widespread degradation of aquatic ecosystems.
The cache is hidden in a fluvial segment (not in the river itself, but in the surroundings) in a coastal river of the Tagus catchment, where the species still maintain an important population.
You may park your car at N38º43.462, W009º15.396 or alternatively in the surroundings, and then proceed, whenever possible, along the river bank.
Please remember: stay away from steeper river bank sections, particularly during high flow events.
The coordinates have an estimated position error of 5m.

A sample containing a real preserved individual of this species has been placed in the cache, so you can have a closer contact with the species. This sample belongs to the reference collection of the Higher Institute of Agronomy and therefore MUST NOT be taken away from the cache in any circumstance. It is only for viewing purposes. Distribuição
Sendo um endemismo lusitânico, só se encontra em rios Portugueses, estando a sua distribuição circunscrita à bacia hidrográfica do Tejo, nomeadamente aos afluentes do seu curso inferior onde se encontra de forma muito localizada e fragmentada, às pequenas bacias do Oeste, à bacia hidrográfica do Sado e às pequenas bacias litorais entre o Sado e o Mira.
Ecologia
Pouco se sabe acerca da ecologia desta espécie. É encontrada sobretudo em pequenos cursos de água de corrente fraca a moderada e com cobertura de vegetação. A reprodução parece ocorrer entre Janeiro e Abril. Outros aspectos da ecologia desta espécie, como o seu regime alimentar, são ainda desconhecidos.
Factores de Ameaça
Os principais factores de ameaça são a degradação do habitat, provocada pela construção de barragens, alteração do regime natural de caudais, captação de água, degradação da qualidade da água e introdução de espécies exóticas. O isolamento geográfico provocado pela degradação dos habitats é particularmente grave no caso das populações da bacia do Tejo, que poderá causar a curto prazo a inevitável redução da diversidade genética.
A cache
Esta cache pretende dar-vos a conhecer uma espécie exclusivamente presente em rios Portugueses e que se encontra criticamente ameaçada face à contínua degradação dos ecossistemas fluviais.
A cache encontra-se num troço ribeirinho de um rio (não no próprio rio mas na zona envolvente) da bacia hidrográfica do Tejo, onde ainda existe uma população considerável de indivíduos desta espécie.
Podem estacionar o carro em N38º43.462, W009º15.396 ou alternativamente nas redondezas, e depois prosseguir, sempre que possível, ao longo da margem do rio.
Por favor, lembrem-se: mantenham-se afastados de secções declivosas nas margens, particularmente durante períodos de elevado caudal.
As coordenadas têm um erro de posição estimado de 5m.

Para que possam ter um contacto mais estreito com esta espécie, foi colocado no container uma amostra contendo um exemplar desta espécie devidamente conservada. Esta amostra pertence à colecção de referência do Instituto Superior de Agronomia e como tal NÃO DEVE, em circunstância alguma, ser levada da cache.
