[ENG] Mennyt loisto (Past glory) cache takes you to see an abandoned sector beacon in the nature protection area of Letonniemi.
[FIN] Koordinaateista löydät käytöstä poistetun Koskela nimisen sektoriloiston. Loisto on rakennettu 1940 ohjaamaan laivaliikennettä Toppilan satamaan johtavalle laivaväylälle. Maankohoamisen vuoksi loisto on jäänyt 150 metrin päähän merenrannasta, ja se on jäänyt täysin kasvillisuuden kätköön. Loisto on poistettu merenkulun ohjauskäytöstä 1990-luvun alussa. Loiston kivijalkana on neliönmuotoinen betonilaatta, jonka päällä on pyöreä betonikuorinen tornirakennelma. Torni on alun perin ollut väriltään punainen, samoin kuin sen ylätasannetta kiertävät suojakaiteet. Tornin huipulla on valkoinen kahdeksankulmainen teräksinen lyhtykoju, jonka sisällä on ollut asetyleenikaasulla toiminut loistolaite. Loiston kaasuvarasto on ollut sijoitettuna tornin alaosaan. Nykyisin loisto on sotkettu graffitein ja se on joutunut muutenkin ilkivallan kohteeksi. Loisto sijaitsee Oulun kaupungin omistamalla Letonniemen luonnonsuojelualueella, joka tunnetaan myös nimellä Piispanlettto. Alueelle kulkeva luontopolku kulkee tornin sivuitse. Luonnonsuojelualueella on lintutorni ja nuotiopaikka. Kätkön sijoittamiselle on pyydetty lupa Merenkulkulaitokselta. Sen sijaan grafitin- ja ilkivallantekijät eivät lupaa ole vaivautuneet pyytämään. Sopivan parkkipaikan löydät koordinaateista: N65 03.729 E25 24.507.
Varoitus! Mennyt loisto ei ole drive-in kätkö, vaan se on maastoluokitukseltaan todella viitosen kätkö. Sen saavuttamiseksi joudut vähän ponnistelemaan fyysisesti. Pääset kyllä kätkön läheisyyteen metsäpolkuja pitkin, mutta lopussa tarvitset joko hyvää kiipeilytaitoa tai mahdollisesti joudut tuomaan mukanasi apuvälineistöä. Alastulo on vaikempi kuin ylösmeno, ja köydenpätkä voi huomattavasti auttaa sitä. Tosin kätköttäjä on käynyt kätköllä aika monesti ilman mitään apuvälineitä. Purkkiin eivät enää mahdu kulkijat.
[ENG] At the coordinates you will find a sector beacon called Koskela-beacon. The beacon has been built in 1940 to guide boat traffic heading to the route leading to Toppila harbour. Because of the continuous landlift in the area, the beacon is nowadays situated already 150 meters from the seashore, and it is hiding within vegetation. It has been disused in the end of the last century. Originally the beacon has a square shaped concrete base and a round concrete shelled tower construction. The tower and safety rails on the top were originally painted red, and the beacon cabin was white. Inside the cabin was the beacon device, which was lighted with acetylene gas. The gas bottles were stored within the tower. Nowadays the tower has been scrawled with graffiti, and vandalized otherwise. The beacon is situated in the nature protection area of Letonniemi (known also as Piispanletto). The nature trail leading to the area is bypassing the beacon. There is a bird tower and fire place in the tip of Letonniemi. You will find a parking plot from the coordinates: N65 03.729 E25 24.507.
Warning! Mennyt loisto is not a drive-in geocache, and its terrain is really five. To reach it you have to struggle physically. You will get at the cache along forest trais. However, in the end you will need either good climbing skills or you have to carry some equipment with you to reach it. Descent is more diffcult than ascent, and piece of rope may significantly help your descent. However, the owner of the cache has visited several times at the cache without any gadgets. There is not any more space in the container for the trackables.
