I heard a plane when I placed this cache. I'll bet that just
about every time that I have ever been here that I've heard planes
flying to or leaving from San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco
airports or nearby Moffet Field. Plane noise is just so ubiquitous
here (Ha! I finally used that word in a sentence! )
But there was a day I was here when there were no flying planes
to hear:
September 11, 2001.
I remember listening to the radio during my morning commute from
Santa Cruz to Sunnyvale and trying to make sense of the odd vague
confusing conflicting news reports about crashing planes. When I
got to work some coworkers and I turned on a television and we
watched planes striking buildings, buildings burning, buildings
collapsing.
I doubt that I got much work done that morning and I was glad
for the opportunity to come here at lunch for a meditative
walk.
And to this day I distinctly remember how eerily quiet it was to
me to NOT hear planes here that day. (All planes flights had been
ordered cancelled and grounded by then.) Only once was there any
aircraft noise: two brute military helicopters flew fast and low
far off along the Santa Cruz mountains before disappearing from
sight and sound.
I often think of that quiet afternoon when I come here
still.
May you hear a plane fly when you seek this cache.
Enjoy! And happy caching.
