An unusual relic in a picturesque location. The hut here looks well and truly out of place. Depending on the chosen route the drive to this cache is as easy or hard as you choose to make it.
Located at 1400 metres above sea level this could easily be the highest railway relic in Australia. I can't confirm this but I'd find it hard to believe anyone will find another to take the title.
Why is it here? Who put it here? I have no idea.
As an emergency shelter it is basic at best and unlike most huts at this altitude you can't have a fire in it. I surmise that deer hunters or cattlemen procured it at the right price and trailered it in many years ago. Clearly it's now derailed as there are none of it's required tracks here.
Aproaches from several directions are many and varied in their difficulty. Coming via my other cache to the south on Sth Basalt Knob would be the most difficult route. Brewery Creek Track is an easy run from Talbotville though less spectacular. It can be reached from my cache on the Blue Rag Range to the north after the gates are open when winter track closures are not in place (www.parkweb.vic.gov.au) and could be reached from the Dargo High Plains Road but I'm not sure what the track is like.
At least part of the winter this cache will be inaccessible due to snow.
Which ever way you choose you will need a 4wd though some routes would allow a soft roader with a competent driver in, but they would not be able to access other caches in the area.
Preferably travel in a well maintained 4wd with high clearance & low range. You need to be trained in it's use to tackle many of the tracks the area has to offer - particularly those to my other caches. Stall stop & recovery techniques, recovery gear and proficiency in their use are essential.
The cache is a small plastic screw top container. No pen. Small swaps only. Please recover so that it is concealed from view.
Travel safe, look after the tracks. Cache & 4wd responsibly.
