Spending the summer in the Eastern Sierra’s, we continually travel the highways and back roads in search of caches. We often travel to Benton on our Harley Davidson via the Benton Crossing Road.
The cache is a log-only so bring a writing implement. It’s on private property (adjacent to the highway) and permission was given by a gracious lady who is the property owner (after a lengthy explanation of the geocaching process and experience.)
One of the oldest surviving towns in Mono County, Benton was once a thriving, silver mining town, with up to 5,000 inhabitants. Today, it is a peaceful and tranquil oasis where time stands still. Come experience yesteryear and enjoy the interesting buildings, old mining and farming equipment, and the natural hot springs, while you step back in time to a gentler atmosphere. The Old House is one of the remaining structures.
Benton is centrally located for all your Eastern Sierra adventures including paved and plowed access to the Mammoth Mountain ski area less than an hour away. Nearby Bishop and the Owens Valley offer a wide variety of seasonal and year-round recreational opportunities. During the summer and fall, the State Highway 120 offers quick access to Mono Lake and Yosemite National Park.
The surrounding area is wild range. You can drive a short distance and view mustangs in a rugged and scenic setting. See the gems of Montgomery Peak and Boundary Peak. These mountains rise almost 8,000' above the valley floor and at sunset, they simply come alive. Climb one of these spectacular peaks and then return to soak and celebrate in our relaxing natural hot springs.
