A nice drive in the forest, finishing with a 1/2 mile relatively easy hike.
If you like FS lookouts from the past, you will surely like Black Mountain Lookout in the Ochocos. This cache can be found to the east of Big Summit Prairie. There is about 5 miles of good gravel road to the base of this mountain.
At this cache site, you will find the remnants of an old fire 'lookout', built in 1937 and standing 70' tall. This is unique in that it is a crow's nest in the top of a large Ponderosa Pine tree. The ladder system is still intact, but be warned not to try to ascend. It looks pretty rickety. From the top, one could look out over the surrounding trees to this whole Big Summit Prairie area, including Lookout Mtn, Round Mtn, Pisgah Mtn, and Paulina Butte, all lookouts in the area.
Should you want pictures with the right light, late afternoon will work best.
