Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the above location. To find it you need to decipher the code below, encrypted using actual German World War II Army Enigma Code. You need to find four other related caches hiden around the Wrexham area, to gather essential clues you will need to crack the code.


The story of the famous Enigma cipher machine combines ingenious technology, military history and the mysterious world of espionage, codebreakers and intelligence into a real thriller.

Never before has the fate of so many lives been so influenced by one cryptographic machine, as in the Second World War. Enigma is the most famous and appealing example of the battle between codemakers and codebreakers. Enigma showed the importance of cryptography to military and civil intelligence.

The successful cryptanalysis of Enigma was first done by Polish intelligence in the 1930's, and during the war done on an industrial scale at Bletchley Park near Milton Keynes. The intelligence obtain from this and other sources (known as Project ULTRA) has been credited with shortening the war by up to 2 years. To find this cache, you will have to emulate these achievements (in a modest way) by deciphering the following Enigma cryptogram.

To do this, first of all you need to get hold of your own Engima machine. The good news is that this is nowhere near as difficult or as costly as it sounds. (Although a genuine article from WWII in proper working order would set you back about £25,000!) There were several types of Enigma machine in use by the German Military. The kind you need is a UKW=C Enigma machine, as used by the Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht.

When you've got your Enigma, it will only work when you use the right settings. Trial and error is not really a practical way of doing it, because there are about 4 quadrillion permutations.

I recently finished reading a book about Enigma, which gave me this concept for a cache. Please feel free to email me with any questions or comments. Since putting this out, its been pointed out to me that there was a series of Enigma caches put out a couple of years ago by the Mars Bars, so its not as original an idea as I'd thought. But I'm told they were very popular, so I hope you find this one interesting and fun to break into too.
