Santa
Lucrécia de Algeriz
é uma freguesia
portuguesa do concelho de Braga, com 4,49 km² de área e 485
habitantes (2001). Densidade: 108,0 hab/km².
Tipicamente rural,
situa-se a norte de Braga no Vale do Fojo. Antiga freguesia de
Santa Lucrécia de Algeriz foi uma vigairaria de apresentação de uma
cortesia da Sé de Braga. Santa Lucrécia, primeiro nome da
freguesia, é nome de antiga Virgem e Mártir de tempos muito
recuados.
A freguesia de
Santa Lucrécia de Algeriz deve o topónimo "Algeriz" aos árabes.
Primitivamente designado por Algeraz, significava campainhas ou
chocalhos. Segundo alguns autores, o rio de Algeriz seria, pois, o
"rio dos chocalhos".
Compôem esta
freguesia os seguintes lugares: Casais, Castelos, Eiró, Garrido,
Loural, Monte, Reigada, Salgueiro e Souto.
História
de Santa Lucrécia
Santa Lucrécia
viveu em Córdova quando era esta uma cidade moura e a conversão de
um seguidor do Islã significava pena de morte. Seus pais eram ricos
e influentes maometanos, enquanto Lucrécia era uma cristã
baptizada, convertida que fora por uma parenta de nome Litiosa. A
princípio, Lucrécia conservou sua religião em segredo, mas com o
correr do tempo passou a praticá-la mais abertamente, deixando que
os seus pais soubessem. Irritados e alarmados, procuraram fazê-la
apostatar lançando mão de súplicas e ameaças que acabaram em
bofetadas e confinamento. Lucrécia conseguiu mandar recado a S.
Eulógio, perguntado se lhe podia arranjar com Anulona, irmã dele,
algum lugar onde ela pudesse esconder-se. A resposta que o
mensageiro trouxe foi positiva, e assim Lucrécia ficou esperando a
oportunidade para escapulir. Sua atitude ostensivamente passiva
induziu os pais a pensarem que ela estava prestes a fazer-lhes a
vontade, e por isso lhe deram permissão de assistir a um casamento.
Dessa festa, porém, Lucrécia conseguiu fugir e foi ao encontro dos
seus amigos cristãos. Sua ausência foi logo notada, e em
consequência houve um grande alarido, seguido de prisão e
interrogatório de todos os cristãos suspeitos de terem ligação com
ela. Lucrécia foi passando de uma família cristã para outra,
enquanto S. Eulógio visitava-a de tempos em tempos a fim de
instruí-la melhor e fortalecê-la para o desenlace que a aguardava.
Lucrécia acabou sendo descoberta, e tanto ela quanto S. Eulógio
foram levados à presença do juiz. Ora, perguntado por que a
escondera, S. Eulógio respondeu: “Recebi a missão de pregar, e para
mim é um dever sagrado ajudar os que buscam a luz da fé. A ninguém
que procure, recuso-me a mostrar o caminho da vida. O que fiz por
ela, teria feito por ti, se me tivesse pedido”. Assim, os dois
foram açoitados e condenados à morte. Depois de decapitada,
Lucrécia teve o seu corpo lançado no Guadalquivir. Posteriormente,
foi guardado junto ao de S. Eulógio, em Oviedo. Em Acta Sanctorum,
Março, vol. II, consta um breve relato sobre Santa
Lucrécia.
