In 1864 General Lee instructed the Army of Shenandoah to attempt a final raid into Pennsylvania. General Lee hoped to divert Union troops away from the siege that was taking place in Petersburg, Virginia. On July 30th cavalry brigades entered Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and eventually burned it to the ground.
Before returning to Virginia the cavalry brigades attempted to capture Cumberland.
On August 1st with Confederate cavalry roaming around in Western Maryland; General Kelly in command of the garrison in Cumberland knew he had to defend the union supplies and railroad property. General Kelly order troops to take up a position on the high ground two miles east of Cumberland. At 3:00 p.m. a battle ensued in the area known as Folck’s Mill. The battle lasted until after dark, unsure of the remaining strength in Cumberland the Confederates withdrew under the cover of darkness to Oldtown, Maryland. The Confederates attempted to capture Cumberland several times through out the war. The cache is a film canister with a FTF prize inside. The area the cache is located is usually quiet; however at times many, many, muggles could be in the area.
