The H: Old Hayward High School Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Krypton: As there's been no cache to find for months, or you have neglected to do necessary maintenance, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Geocache Description:

A small cache on steep hillside overlooking old Hayward High School site

This cache is to commemorate the old Hayward High School and one of the few remnants since its demolition in 1967: a large concrete capital H set into the top of a steep hillside near downtown Hayward. The H has been here for many decades and has the deep layers of paint to prove it. My mom went to this school and she told me that every year, the class would climb the hill and paint the H a new color for the year.

The best access is via the small parking lot at the entrance to Carlos Bee Park off Grove Way 37 41.050 X 122 04.935. You can also get there by parking in the Safeway lot and going up the hill on the side nearest the tennis courts of the apartment complex 37 40.907 X 122 04.878. Parking at Carlos Bee Park will take you past the play structure and up a small hill to the way up the bigger hill (2nd set of coords above). The old road up the hill is now fenced off (wasn't twenty years ago) and that is the trailhead for hilltop access now. These coords are calculations made from decimal-format coords from Google Earth.

There are a number of mature eucalyptus trees nearby that have deposited deep ground cover including bark pieces and acorns that make the footing near the cache treacherous, not to mention that the slope is about forty-five degrees where the H is. Stay close to the H...

Be very careful getting to this cache: take your time and come down from the top. The hillside is only about a hundred feet elevation, but it is straight up and very slippery. The cache is actually somewhere under the H, so no need to search surrounding areas.

There is a moderately steep trail that goes up diagonally from near the tennis court side of the hill that will get you to the hilltop where you can come down. Take a moment once you find the cache to remember all the good times you had back in high school!

Please make sure cache is snug in its place when putting it back; if it's slides out it's a long way down!

Be safe and happy caching!

Update 9/26/10: Came by for a visit and found it right where I placed it over two years ago! If coming from Foothill View and Rock Cave in Curly Reeds, go around the western side of the water tank atop the hill to avoid fence access problems. Didn't see ANYONE up here today, no cops, no bums, NOBODY! You can always come up from below, straight up the hill near the apartments.
