Geocache Description:

short expedition to the remains of a drain, much undergrowth, close to a road

In former times rivers and brooks were used to float timber from the forests into the cities. Few brooks have enough water for this purpose, so dams (forming artificial reservoirs) had to be built. The timber was piled up in the river bed. When the waterstorages were drainded the timber was flushed downstream. The german word for such a dam-construction is „Klause“ (same origin as close).

In the area of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf remnants of a widespread system of these drains can be found. 13 minor and 1 major drain worked together, floating timber as far as Baden. The system was in use until 1939.

This cache is part of a series of caches, dealing with the subject (TAKL = TriftAnlageKlausenLeopoldsdorf). Don't forget to note down the information on the front page of the logbook, you will need it for the Bonus (which will be hidden later).

The Hainbach-Drain is almost totally overgrown. Although it is next to the road nobody would expect it there. There is room for 2 – 3 cars along the road, this is the spot where the old dam meets the road. It is up to you where you face the thorns and nettles. I think it is a bit easier if you just enter the dam and try to turn to the left (towards the storage basin) as soon as possible.
In contrary to the other sites there are hardly any walls to be seen. Below the narrow gap you will see some large boulders: These stones were part of the old city-walls of Vienna, before the wall was dismantled. Above the gap the former storage basin has turned into a wilderness with a meandering little stream. Inside the gap wooden remains of the old drain-construction can still be seen.

At the museum I learned that there are plans to repair the Hainbach-drain (flood protection). For the sake of the cache I hope this will still take some time.

Reception was again very poor in the forest. The hideout again is “classic”, to my amazement there is a path leading past the hideout.

The cache is a small lock-lock-box (0,5 l, bigger than the other ones), containing log-sheets, pencil and a few small trading-items. Large enough for Geocoins and normal-sized Travelbugs.
Please hide it well again.
Have fun!
