In former times rivers and brooks were used to float timber from
the forests into the cities. Few brooks have enough water for this
purpose, so dams (forming artificial reservoirs) had to be built.
The timber was piled up in the river bed. When the waterstorages
were drainded the timber was flushed downstream. The german word
for such a dam-construction is „Klause“ (same origin as close).
In the area of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf remnants of a widespread
system of these drains can be found. 13 minor and 1 major drain
worked together, floating timber as far as Baden. The system was in
use until 1939.
This cache is part of a series of caches, dealing with the
subject (TAKL = TriftAnlageKlausenLeopoldsdorf). Don't forget to
note down the information on the front page of the logbook, you
will need it for the Bonus (which will be hidden later).
Please drive carefully here, this is a valley of horses, there
are many riders on the road.
Not much can be seen from the Grosskrottenbach-Drain from the
road. The walls are hidden in the forest. Clearly visible is a part
of the dam. This dam is part of a meadow. Don’t walk on it when the
grass is high, there is a much more convenient way to enter the
river bed, simply use the waypoint for the trailhead.
The coordinates for the trailhead will show you a wooden pole.
On the other side of the road, where the trees are closest to the
road, there is small path leading zig-zag down to the brook. Follow
the brook upstream until you see the old walls.
Again reception was poor in the dense forest. A ditch leads
straight up to the cache-location. Classic hideout of course.
The cache is a small lock-lock-box (0,5 l, bigger than the other
ones), containing log-sheets, pencil and a few small trading-items.
Large enough for Geocoins and normal-sized Travelbugs.
Please hide it well again.
Have fun!
