A story, told to me by Englishpete - yes really!!

Hope I got the story correct!

Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby

One day Brer Fox wanted to get his own back on Brer Rabbit so he got some tar and mixed it with some turpentine. With it he made a Tar-Baby. When he finished making her, he put a straw hat on her head and sat the little thing in the middle of the road. Brer Fox then went away to hide in the bushes in wait.

Before long Brer Rabbit came hopping down the road when he suddenly stopped astonished. The Tar-Baby just sat there staring at him right in his path.

"Good morning!" says Brer Rabbit, says he. "Nice weather we're having in Perth today"

Tar-Baby didn't say a word, and Brer Fox, he just continued to hide in the bushes, watching.

"How are you feeling this morning?" says Brer Rabbit.

Brer Fox remained hid in the nearby bushes and the Tar-Baby didn't say a thing.

"What is the matter with you then? Are you deaf?" says Brer Rabbit, "Cause if you are, I can shout louder".

The Tar-Baby continued to sit still and Brer Fox remained hidden.

"You're stuck-up, that's what's wrong with you. You think you're too good to talk to me," says Brer Rabbit getting annoyed, "And I'm going to cure you, that's what I'm going to do".

Brer Fox started to chuckle but the Tar-Baby still didn't say a word.

"I'm going to teach you how to talk to respectable folks if it's the last thing I do", says Brer Rabbit, "If you don't take off that hat and say howdy, I'm going to thump you".

The Tar-Baby stayed still and Brer Fox continued hiding quietly in the bushes.

Brer Rabbit kept on asking her why she wouldn't talk and the Tar-Baby kept on saying nothing until Brer Rabbit finally lost his temper, drew back his fist and whacked the Tar-Baby on the jaw. Unfortunately his fist stuck to the gooey tar and he couldn't pull it loose. Still the Tar-Baby stayed still and didn't speak.

"If you don't let me loose, I'm going to hit you again," says Brer Rabbit getting really angry now, and with that he drew back his other fist and whack he hit the Tar-Baby with the other hand and that one stuck fast too.

The Tar-Baby still stayed still and Brer Fox still hid in the bush chuckling to himself.

"Turn me loose, before I kick the stuffing out of you," says Brer Rabbit, now completely furious, but the Tar-Baby just sat there staring at him.

After wrestling with the Tar-Baby Brer Rabbit got completely stuck to her, and still she didn't speak.

At this point Brer Fox walked out from behind the bushes and strolled over to Brer Rabbit looking as innocent as his supressed grin would allow him.

"Howdy, Brer Rabbit," says Brer Fox, "You look sort of stuck up this morning". And unable to containe himself any longer he rolled on the ground and laughed and laughed until he couldn't laugh anymore.

By and by he said, "Well, I expect I got you this time, Brer Rabbit", "There you are and there you'll stay until I fix up a fire because I'm going to barbecue you today, for sure".

Then Brer Rabbit started talking mighty humble.

"I don't care what you do with me, Brer Fox, says Brer Rabbit, "Just as long as you don't fling me in that briar patch - Roast me, "But don't fling me in that briar patch."

"Hang me just as high as you please, Brer Fox", says Brer Rabbit, "but for goodness sake, don't fling me in that briar patch".

"Drown me just as deep as you please, Brer Fox," says Brer Rabbit", "But please do not fling me in that briar patch".

"Skin me Brer Fox," says Brer Rabbit, "Snatch out my eyeballs, tear out my ears by the roots, but please, Brer Fox, don't fling me in that briar patch".

Of course, Brer Fox wanted to get Brer Rabbit as bad as he could, so he caught him by the hind legs swung him around his head a few times and then slung him right in the middle of the briar patch.

Now........... as everyone knows, Brer Rabbit was born and bred in the briar patch and off he scampered away from the speechless Brer Fox..................
