A small cache, along the North Peak Access Road. The cache contains a log book and a few swag items.
With its series of summits, Montara Mountain is actually a spur of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Depending on the approach route you chose to get to the cache, the two most common starting points are either inland at San Pedro Valley Park (a $5.00 parking fee) or right at the coast at Montara State Beach/McNee Ranch and the space-limited Martini Creek/McNee Ranch parking areas (free of charge). A third option is to park along Higgins Way in Pacifica, which dead-ends at a northern trailhead of Old San Pedro Mountain Road. Although I've taken all three routes to the North Peak Access Road, I personally prefer the SPVP approach, hiking along the Montara Mountain Trail (more switchbacks, but not as steep as the Montara State Beach/McNee Ranch route). I've planted a few caches along the routes heading out from SPVP and Higgins Way, and the scenery is different on each route ... so plan on making this journey more than once!
Note: As subsequently noted by AuntFlora (thank you!), pets are not permitted in SPVP, so if hiking to the cache site with your dog, do not use this entrance.
Good exploring!
