Geocache Description:

Part of the City of Ottawa park system with ample parking and easy access. Located off Carling Avenue in west end. Many parking areas not maintained during winter so parking may be further away.

“This is the oldest trans-Canada throughway, the canoe route by the Ottawa River, Lake Nipissing, Lake Superior and Lake Winnipeg and the Churchill River to Lake Athabaska and the Rockies. Past this point travelled many explorers, from Brule, Champlain and la Verendrye to Mackenzie, Thompson and Fraser. The Recollet and Jesuit missionaries went this way to and from Huronia. The fur traders, from the early coureurs des bois to the later brigades in big Montreal canoes paddling to and from the “pays d’en haut”, made this river their highway. ” NCC 1964 This is part of a series of eight caches stretching along twelve kilometers of river with a canoeing theme. They can all be accessed from the Ottawa River, the Green Belt trails or the National Capital Bike Trail system during freeze up. Poison Ivy is everywhere along the river but the six caches are chosen so as to avoid the stuff. The container is a small Lock n Lock which at placement had a small biner with TB, signal mirror, spring toggle, emergency repair tape, rescue whistle, log and pencil. Parking, paved walking paths, bikes to be walked, no dogs, public boat launch, park benches to wait out muggles, play ground nearby, although not fast moving water here children should be supervised near shoreline at GZ. Be warned there can be hords of muggles here. Please replace the cache as you found it. My GPS has averaging and a 260 point WGS84 UTM coordinate I determined was 18T 435292 E 5022626 N; FYI If you have enjoyed this series then you should visit Kenmore's 'In the Footsteps of the Voyageurs' GCHRG1 for a real history lesson. You can walk in their moose hides on the actual portage, smell the beaver castors and almost taste the dried berries and pemmican!
