Am Nordhang eines der Gebirge auf Kos liegt das verlassene Dorf Old Pýli (Paleo Pýli). Bereits im Mittelalter siedelten sich hier Menschen an. Der Ort  war vom Meer aus nicht zu sehen und somit gut vor Piratenüberfällen geschützt. Um 1830 aber wurde das Dorf von einer Choleraepidemie heimgesucht, bei der laut eines Einheimischen mehr als die Hälfte der Einwohner – größtenteils alte Menschen und Kinder – starben. Die Überlebenden suchten Zuflucht in anderen Regionen der Insel.

Heute sind nur noch Steinruinen übrig, zwischen denen die Ziegen weiden und zu denen ganze Schafherden getrieben werden. Recht gut erhalten sind lediglich wenige Gebäude. Zum einen steht am unteren Dorfrand die Kirche Asómati Taxiárches Gavriíl ke Michaíl. Zum anderen auf einem kleinen Plateau mittlerer Höhe die etwas größere Marienkirche Panagía ton Kastrianón aus dem 11. Jahrhundert. Diese Ebene neben der Kirche war ehemals der Friedhof des Ortes, am nordwestlichen Rand ist die Grabkammer eines wohlhabenderen Einwohners des Dorfes ebenfalls noch recht gut zu erkennen.

On the northern slope of a mountain on Kos is the abandoned village of Old Pýli (Paleo Pýli). Already in the Middle Ages people started settling here. It can’t be seen from the seaside and therefore it was well protected from pirate raids. Around 1830 there was a cholera epidemic in Pyli. However, in 1830 the village was devastated by a cholera epidemic in which according to a local half of the inhabitants died, mostly old people and children. The survivors took refuge to different parts of the island.

Today the only remains of this village are ruins in which goats graze and entire herds of sheep are driven to. Only a few buildings are quite well-preserved. At the lower edge of the village you will find the church Asómati Taxiárches Gavriíl ke Michaíl. On a small plateau in medium height there is the slightly larger church of the Lady “Panagía ton Kastrianón” from the 11th Century. This level next to the church used to be the cemetery of the village. At the nortwestern border a burial chamber of an apparently better situated inhabitant is still visible.

Dank eines recht gut erhaltenen Raumes kann dort im Schatten nach dem je nach Wetterlage anstrengenden Aufstieg sehr gut Rast gemacht werden, bei der man den beeindruckenden Blick über die Nordküste der Insel (insbesondere Marmari und Tigaki) genießen kann.

Achtet in der Umgebung der Burg besonders auf eure Kinder!! Zwei von drei Wasserzisternen im Boden sowie auch alle anderen Abgründe sind nicht gesichert.

On top of the mountain towards the coast you will find the ruins of a Byzantine castle from the 11th Century .
After a strenuous climb (depending on the weather situation) you may have a break in the shade of a fairly well-preserved room, and enjoy an impressive view above the north coast of the island (in particular Marmari and Tigaki).

Pay attention to your children around the castle! Two out of three water cisterns in the ground as well as all other chasms are not secured.

Sieht man von der Burg aus in Richtung Landesinneres, kann man auf dem Hügel gegenüber zwei helle Wohnhäuser erkennen, zu denen sich der Abstieg von der Burg und Wiederaufstieg wirklich lohnt (vor allem für Cacher, die den Cache finden wollen ;-)). Der in den Häusern geborene Grieche Georgos restaurierte die Wohnhäuser aus dem Familienbesitz und betreibt in den Sommermonaten eine kleine Taverne, an deren Tischen zu sitzen es romantischer nicht sein könnte. Der Blick auf die Burg, die Küste, das Meer sowie die nördlich von Kos gelegene Insel Kálimnos ist fantastisch.

Besonders zu empfehlen ist das BBQ, das Georgos jeden Sonntagabend veranstaltet. Hier gibt es nicht nur das unserer Meinung nach beste Kotelette der Insel, sondern wohl auch den romantischsten und beeindruckendsten Blick auf den Sonnenuntergang. Die Atmosphäre ist unbeschreiblich und eigentlich für jeden, der Romantik sucht, ein größeres Muss als der Besuch der zahlreichen Ausgrabungsstätten.

Wenn man viel Glück hat, sieht man entlang der Mauer der unteren Terrasse der Taverne eine oder vielleicht auch beide Schildkröten, die es sich in den Sommermonaten bei Georgos gut gehen lassen. Im Winter verlassen sie den Ort, kehren aber jedes Jahr um die gleiche Zeit zurück.

Apart from the castle in the direction of the inland, two bright  houses may be found on the hill. It is worthwhile  to descent from the castle and re-ascent (especially for Cacher who want to find the cache ;-)). Georgos, who was born in these houses, restored the houses from the family-owned and operates a small tavern during the summer. To sit  at the tables could not be more romantic! The view on the castle, the coast, the sea and the north island of Kos Kálimnos is fantastic.
Especially recommended is the BBQ Georgos held every Sunday evening. In our opinion Georgos’ chop of meat is the best on the island, and the taverne has probably the most romantic and impressive view of the sunset. The atmosphere is really indescribable, and for anyone who seeks romance it may be more important than the visit of the numerous excavation sites.
If you are in luck, you can see one or maybe both turtles along the wall of the lower terrace of the tavern. During the summer, the turtles have a good time at the tavern. In the winter they leave the place, but return each year at the same time.

Anfahrt:

Nach Old Pyli (Paleo Pyli) gelangt Ihr, indem Ihr von der Hauptstraße der Insel Richtung Pyli fahrt und kurz vor Pyli nach links abbiegt. Auf dieser Straße fahrt ihr immer weiter geradeaus, bis Ihr an eine Viehtränke unter Bäumen kommt. Hier könnt Ihr parken. Meist von vormittags bis Frühnachmittag trefft Ihr hier auf den Griechen Iannis. Iannis wird euch in einem Kostüm vor der Nase herumtanzen und euch um 1€ für ein Foto mit ihm bitten. Er ist zwar ein wenig verrückt, aber ein netter Kerl, also tut ihm doch den Gefallen.

Approach:
To reach Old Pyli (Paleo Pyli) you have to drive on the main road towards Pyli and shortly before Pyli you have to turn to the left. On this road you always go straight until you reach a potion under trees. Here you can find parking. Most from morning to early afternoon you will meet Iannis the Greek. Iannis will dance in fromt of your nose in a costume and ask you for 1 € for a photo with him. He is a little crazy, but a nice guy, so do him the favor.

An der Taverne angekommen, könnte es sein, dass der Cache auf Grund von Muggelgefahr in direkter Nähe zum Cache nicht gehoben werden kann. Nehmt Euch also ein wenig Zeit. In der Regel gehen die meisten Leute nach Aufnahme eines Getränks recht schnell weiter. Um die Zeit des Wartens ein wenig zu verkürzen, nehmt an einem der Tische Platz, grüßt Georgos recht lieb von uns, trinkt eine Cola, ein Wasser oder einen Frappe und scheut Euch nicht, ein wenig mit Georgos zu quatschen. Er kennt nicht nur alles und jeden auf der Insel (unter anderem einen sehr netten deutschen Auswanderer, der in Marmari eine Taverne sowie einen Surfclub betreibt, in dem man auch spontan einen lohnenswerten Crash-Kurs im Surfen absolvieren kann), sondern er spricht auch fließend Deutsch und freut sich immer, nette Leute kennen zu lernen.

When you arrive at the tavern, it might be that the cache can’t be lifted due to the danger of “Muggels” in direct proximity to the cache. So you take a little time. In general, most people go to host a drink fairly quickly. While you are waiting take seats at one of the tables, greet Georgos quite fond of us, drink a Coke, a water or a Frappe and do not be shy to chat a little bit with Georgos. He even knows everything and everyone on the island (including a very nice German emigrants who carries on a tavern and a surf club in Marmari, where you can spontaneously absolve a worthwhile crash course in surfing), but he also speaks fluent German and is always glad to to get to know nice people.

Kleiner Tipp am Rande: Besucht unbedingt auch die Toilette vor Ort. Georgos hat neue "Fliesen" bestellt^^ Ist auf jeden Fall sehenswert^^

Rein theoretisch kann man den Cache auch fast als Drive-In machen, indem Ihr der Straße weiter den Berg hinauf folgt und euch bei Abzweigungen links haltet, auch wenn die Beschaffenheit des Weges dort schlechter wird und man lieber rechts weiter fahren würde^^

Dies ist aber nur mit Auto oder Quad möglich, für Roller ist die Auffahrt ungeeignet, mit dem Fahrrad sicher machbar, obwohl man dann sicher besser zu Fuß unterwegs wäre.

One word of advice on the edge: You necessarily have to visit the toilet. Georgos has ordered new "tile" ^^ If in any case worth seeing ^^

Theoretically, the cache can be almost made as Drive-In by follwing the road  up to the hill and turn left at the arm, even if the nature of the way there will be worse and you would prefer to drive on to the right ^ ^
But this is only possible by car or quad, as the ramp is inappropriate for scooter.
