L’autre jour j’ai décidé de prendre mon avion
téléguidé et de la modifier de façon à pouvoir suivre sa position
grâce a mon GPS. Étant donné que mon GPS est un Garmin Vista HCx et
qu'il possède un altimètre, j’ai pensé qu’il serait
plaisant d’en profiter pour voir quelle hauteur je pourrais
atteindre avec mon avion. J’y ai donc installé mon GPS avec
un system pour transmettre les donnés a mon laptop. J’ai
également fait en sorte que Google Earth affiche ces donnés en
continue sur le laptop. De cette façon je me suis dit que je
pourrais piloter l’avion en regardant simplement
l’écran du laptop. Durant ce temps Slim_N lui se servirait de
ses jumelles pour suivre mon progrès.
Alors après mon décollage j’ai manœuvre mon avion pour
qu’elle fasse de grand cercle et commence a monter lentement.
C’est dure a croire mais je suis arrivé a faire de beaux
cercles parfait avec l’aide du GPS. Le plan fonctionnait a
merveille jusqu'à ce que les piles de mon GPS tombe a plat. Je
m’en suis pas rendu compte immédiatement et j’ai
continue de grimper en suivant mon beau cercle pendant encore
34.408 Sec; a ce point la mon avion se retrouva en dehors du champ
d’action de ma télécommande et l’avion tomba en mode
« fail safe ». L’avion se mit instantanément a
voler en ligne droite en maintenant exactement l’altitude, la
vitesse et le cap qu’elle avait au moment ou le « fail
safe » a pris effet. Slim_N confirma que l’avion
continua ainsi exactement 5.20786 Sec avant que le niveau 2 du
« fail safe » s’engage.
Il faut que je vous explique que cette avion est la même que
j’utilise pour jouer a un jeu ou je tente de viser des cibles
au sol avec des œufs largués de celle-ci. J’ai
découvert tôt que c’est très dégoûtant un avion qui
s’écrase avec sa cargaison d’œufs encore a bord.
Alors mon « fail safe » niveau 2 consiste a larguer les
œufs avant de couper les moteurs pour permettre a
l’avion de planer jusqu’au sol. Malheureusement mon GPS
était justement dans la soute a « bombe ».

The other
day I decided to setup my remote control jet plane so I could track
it’s position using my GPS. Since my GPS is a Garmin Vista
HCx and it has an altimeter; I figured it would be cool to see how
high I could actually fly my plane. So I setup my GPS so it could
transmit the information back to my laptop computer. I setup Google
Earth to continually display the position of the plane on the
laptop. This way I figured I would be able to pilot the plane by
tracking it on the laptop screen. Slim_N would also watch my
progress using is binoculars.
So after
take off I setup my plane to fly in large circles and started to
slowly climb. Amazingly I was able to fly perfect circles with the
help of the GPS. Everything was working according to plan until my
GPS batteries died. I did not notice right away and continued to
fly upward along a perfect circle for another 34.408 Sec at which
point I flew out of reach of my transmitter and the plane went into
fail safe mode. The plane instantly started flying in a straight
line, maintaining the exact altitude, speed and heading it was
flying when fail safe mode kicked in. According to Slim_N it
continued on that path for exactly 5.20786 Sec before my special
fail safe level 2 kicked in!
You have to
know that this R/C plane is also used to play a game where I
attempt to drop eggs on targets on the ground. I discovered it can
get quite messy when your plane crash lands with the eggs still on
board. So fail safe level 2 consists in dropping the payload before
shutting down the engine and gliding back to the ground.
Unfortunately the payload for this flight was my GPS.
