Arnside and Viaduct have provided a superb backdrop many times for us whilst watching the sun go down over the lakeland fells whilst eating Fish & Chips.
The Sands of Morecambe bay are notorious for catching people out - the tide can come in "At the speed of a galloping horse" and the quicksands can catch even the most experienced locals out. A warning hooter sounds (sometimes!) at the approach of the tide.
Be VERY CAREFUL if you venture out onto the sands
I'd advise against it!
At the highest tides, you may be fortunate to see the Arnside Bore - we've caught it once in our many visits.
For centuries, the only route to 'Lancashire over the water' was over the sands. With the coming of the railway in 1857, Another, safer and faster route was open. Construction of the viaduct spelt the end for the port at Milnthorpe, which was already in decline due to the silting up of the estuary.
We have placed this cache close to a large free car park. However, the car park is not open at the highest tides. There's plenty of parking along the promenade too.
The promenade along the Kent estuary westwards (ish) towards New Barns is a lovely evening stroll. Beyond New barns, one path follows the clifftop whilst another follows the sands - this one is not passable at high tide.
