There is some mystery regarding the history of Hell Hollow. If you live in Plainfield (or even if you don't), you mind find it interesting to read about the short-lived fascination with Spiritism that swept through the town in the 19th century. There is a book available at the Plainfield and Meriden Libraries, entitled "Choice White Pines and Good Land" that chronicles the founding and early history of the town. It's a worthwhile read.
