Geocache Description:

Spooky photo taken on the way to the cache

Combermere Abbey lies on the border of Cheshire and Shropshire. The estate has a large crescent shaped mere, woods and parkland. The abbey was home to a Cistercian monastery which was established in 1133.

Since the Dissolution in 1538, when Henry VIII closed the monastery, the Abbey and its lands have been home to only two families - the Cotton family whose most famous member, Sir Stapleton Cotton became the 1st Viscount Combermere, and the Crossley family, who have been its custodians since 1919.

Today the estate is still in private ownership and in recent years the owners have worked hard to restore and protect the many listed buildings. In the summer, the Abbey is open to the public for tours, which also include the fabulous walled gardens.

The cache is an ammo box hidden on a nice walk through some beautiful woods. You can park to the south and walk up the marked Public Footpath through the woods, but for a longer walk, you can start from the northern end of the same Public Footpath. Please note that it can be muddy at times.
