An ammo box, easy to find, fun for kids, easy 1/2 mile round trip
walk.
We understand that parking along the shoulder of 1806 is
reserved for emergencies, so please park elsewhere. I received a
suggestion that you "park on the East-West gravel road leading to
the off road vehicle course. And it was about 0.22 mi walk straight
North from where we parked..." See the probable coordinates in the
Possible Preferred Parking Area.
If you approach the cache from the highway, the ridge that you
will be walking on from the highway to near the cache is part of
the Oahe Spillway. Normally we think of a spillway as a concrete
slab on the back side of a dam that has water running over it in
high water times. Not so for Oahe. The spillway runs around the
back of the hill from the "Spillway Geocache" to this area where
the berm keeps the water on Corp property when it flows. But, it
has never flowed to any great extent. Perhaps in the highest water
levels a trickle came down this way, but the gates have never been
opened and the water is too low now to flow down it. But the
channel is there should it ever be needed.
Congratulations to Family Geo on FTF.
I plan to add a map of the area should I find one on the
internet.
