Geocache Description:

Explore Vermont!

This is part of the Vermont 251 Plus 4 Geocaching Club, an attempt to bring caches to each and every town, city and gore in the state of Vermont!

When I started researching the Vermont 251 Plus 4 adventure I was most interested in visiting and learning a bit about the gores that we have. This is the third gore that I visited and here is a little bit of what I know.

This is one of eight tracts of land that totaled around 52,000 acres in six counties granted to Samuel Avery between 1791 and 1796. Only 2 of the tracts survived as separate entities into the 20th century. The 'Averys Gore' in Franklin County was divided between Montgomery and Belvidere in 1963.
You can visit Virtual Vermont to learn more interesting facts about Averys Gore

About the cache: Well I couldn't bring you to downtown Averys Gore, 'cause, well, there is none! As a matter of fact the 2000 US Census shows exactly 0 residents in the gore! But they do have "Unknown Pond" and I thought that would be a great place to visit.

We started the hike off of Route 114 at N: 44deg 54.570, W: 71deg 52.568 and followed the old logging roads up the mountain to the pond.
When you come to the first log landing, it looks like the path is off to the right, don't go that way!! (Don't worry I know!) If you go straight you will cross a small brook, then you can go right and you will be able to follow the trails all the way to the pond.
The day we hiked we followed some fresh moose tracks for quite some time. We never saw the big guy though. (Not sure if I am happy or sad.)
You are looking for a small round lock-n-lock about 4 or 5 feet off the ground.
Come and enjoy the peace and tranquility at Unknown Pond in Averys Gore!
