Povest o
Lokýtkovi
Do zdiva veže
Novomestské radnice je zasazen železný loket
– stredoveká míra. Tady si mohl
každý overit, zda jej kupec pri prodeji látky
nenapálil. Míra byla umístena na zdi pomerne
vysoko, proto ne každý na ni dosáhl.
Z tohoto duvodu mestští radní najali
muže vysoké postavy, který všem
zájemcum pomohl a látku pomocí lokte premeril.
Ve stredoveku lidé dostávali jména podle toho
jakou práci vykonávali, proto zacali muži
ríkat Loket.
Po letech, když zemrel, zdedil tuto práci jeho syn. Ten
však nemel tak statnou postavu, byl menšího
vzrustu, proto dostal jméno Lokýtek.
Jednoduchá práce Lotýktovi nestacila, chtel
víc penez. Proto se domluvil s nepoctivými
pláteníky a zacal ocernovat ostatní
poctivé remeslníky. Když k nemu
prišel clovek s prosbou o premerení
plátny, zeptal se od koho látka je. Podle odpovedi
bud míru pochválil, nebo pohanel. Ten, kdo mu
dával tajne peníze mel míru vždy dobrou,
ostatní byli ocerneni.
Behem nejaké doby prišla spousta poctivých
obchodníku na mizinu. Vrtalo jim v hlave, proc u nich
lidé prestávají nakupovat. Až jeden
bystrý pláteník prišel na to,
v cem by mohl být problém. Vzal své
plátno, peclive je nameril a prišel za
Lokýtkem s prosbou o premerení. Když se jej
Lokýtek jako každého zeptal, odkud plátno
má, popravde rekl své jméno. „Tak to
vás ošidili, pane. Tam už nechodte“.
Jakmile pláteník uslyšel tento ortel,
náramne se rozzuril a všem lidem s krikem
odhalil Lokýtkuv podvod. Lokýtek ve strachu utekl a
nikdo jej už nikdy nevidel. Pláteník
z rozcilení onemocnel a druhý den
zemrel.
Vždy ve výrocí pláteníkovy smrti
se v noci objeví duch, s desem v ocích
pohlédne na železný loket, jako by jej honili
probehne kolem radnice a zmizí….

The Short Cubit legend
In the masonry of
New Town City Hall an iron cubit – a medieval measure is
embedded. In past ages everybody could check here if the clothier
didn’t trick him. The measure was placed a bit higher on the
wall, so not everybody was able to reach it. That’s why town
councilors hired a tall man who helped measuring the cloth to
everybody who asked for it. In medieval people got names after
their jobs, so the man was called Cubit. After his death, his son
inherited this job. He wasn’t that tall, so people started to
call him The Short Cubit.
Easy work was not
enough for The Short Cubit. He wanted to have more money.
That’s why he made an agreement with crooked clothiers and
started to discredit other honest merchants. Every time someone
came to him to control the cloth measure, he asked from whom the
cloth came. Accordingly to the answer he approved or disparaged the
measure. Those clothiers who gave money to Short Cubit had good
measure, others had wrong. During certain time many merchants were
broke and wondering why folks stopped buying from them.
Then one bright
merchant came with an idea. He measured his cloth correctly and
came to the Short Cubit asking him for control. As usually The
Short Cubit asked for origin of the cloth and merchant answered
truly with his name. “Oh, you were tricked, sir. Don’t
buy from that clothier anymore.” The merchant hearing this
verdict became furious and disclosed Cubit’s trick. Short
Cubit didn’t wait a second and ran away. Unfortunately the
clothier became sick from rage and died a day after.
On every anniversary
of clothier’s death the ghost of Short Cubit appears at the
City Hall, with feverous eyes shortly gazes at the cubit on the
wall and as chased runs around the corner on city hall and
disappears…
