Take a tour into the Dunes Pet Cemetery... if you dare! Short
multi stage NIGHT cache located inside Indiana Dunes State
Park.
The Indiana Dunes State Park is steeped in history. From early
Native American camps, early settlement towns, French forts, Civil
War Guard Towers, and even a mysterious pet cemetery.
While park staff have known of its existance for many years, few
can explain its history or importance. In an area where it was
commonly thought that Chicago gangsters dumped bodies off of what
is now US 12, pets were laid to rest some years after the state
purchased the property to create the Indiana Dunes State Park in
1925. Few people that know of this location will venture here in
the dark. It was even recently that a suicide took place at these
starting coordinates, where a man shot himself outside his truck
late one night.
Hallowed ground for those animals that lie buried here. Seeing the
markers far in the woods often brings chills down the spine, and a
swing of the flashlight in directions unknown, searching for the
howling sound behind you!
Daily entrance fees are charged at the gate to Indiana Dunes State
Park. For state residents they are $4 weekday, $5 weekend, $10 out
of state. Entrance into the park is necessary to find this cache.
Recommended parking can be found before the main campground
entrance. From there, walk the road into the Youth Tent Area
(Nissaki). There is no access from State Park Rd, and you will
probably be ticketed if not towed by National Lakeshore Rangers.
At the posted coordinates you will find a fire
tack on a telephone pole. From there, follow the criss crossing
path of fire tacks until you find two glowing eyes staring at you
down low! Total stages is between 7-10. Use your GPS to back track
or walk the mound next to you and dare to cross through the pet
cemetery!
With campers nearby, please try to muffle any frightened
screams. Good luck, may no souls harm you tonight!
