"Some stupid with flare gun a burned the place to the ground" is appropo, although not quite what happened here. While there is nothing left of the former Scott Street Steak & Pub but an empty gravel lot it didn't burn down but was torn down because saving it was cost prohibitive. I don't know any of the sordid details of Scott Street's demise except that a fire led to the Pub being closed and not much later the whole half block was sold off at a cost of 1.4 million. Temporarily, at least, the city will be creating metered parking by paving and landscaping the gravel lot.

Typically I like to hide these Pickin' caches as close to the former venues as I possibly can but it's not always feasible, as is the case here. When you find the cache, you'll be below the bridge. If you go up to the bridge and look to the East you will see a half block gravel area where Scott Street Steak & Pub, Dwellers, Psychedelic Wonders and The Emporium recently sat.

I saw many many good shows in the mid-90's and came down to the pub every Tuesday night to see Mary Schneider play her acoustic sets with an occasional amplification and backup by Mike. I once took part in a stirring rendition of Wooden Ships by CSNY that I still recall fondly. The other band I saw plenty of back in the day was Petrified Alien Brains and we always had a blast at those shows! If anybody knows what those guys are up too I'd love for someone to post a note here.

Along with Eli's Mile High, this was one of only a very few venues that I hung out in during my brief stint in Wausau, which seemed like an eternity back then - these places made the time go by so much faster.

Unfortunately, both venues are no longer in existence, and while I am certain some new spot will pick up the slack, nobody can replace these lost music venues nor the lasting memories they created for many of us. Whatever happens in Wausau in the future I know that I will never forget...

Update 5/11/10 - Cache container changed to mag keyholder but is not on anything metal, moved about 30 feet away from original gz new coordinates reflect that.
