The -STEINPLATTE- – the unique -reef out of water- in Europe

Nowadays the limestone rock “STEINPLATTE” rises to 1869 metres above sea-level.

In the past things were quit different. It was more than 200 million years back since the area, where the Alpes are today, had been covered by an enormous ocean named Tethys. Within a period of 50 million years, a gigantic reef composed of the remains of prehistoric plants and animals formed in the ocean. Millions of years later, in the process of formation of the Alpes, the reef came to the surface as a limestone rock. Even today you can find fossils in the limestone.

Answer to us the following questions (per Mail) ?

1. When and who discovered that it was a reef from the Trias-period.
2. Please name three or more fossils which can be found in our present times.
3. Please name one of the most important reefbuilding corals dated from the Trias-period.
4. Go to the position N 47° 36.685` E 012° 34.656`and describe the color and texture of the limestone here? (Layering of the sediments)

Die Steinplatte – das einzige Trockenriff Europas

Heute liegt die Steinplatte 1869 m über dem Meeresspiegel.

Das war mal anders. 200 Millionen Jahre vor unserer Zeit war das Gebiet der heutigen Alpen bedeckt von dem Ur-Ozean Tethys. Innerhalb von 50 Millionen Jahren schufen kalkabscheidende Organismen, Pflanzen und Tiere einen mächtigen Riffkomplex. Im Laufe von Millionen von Jahren versank dieser und wurde durch die Auffaltung der Erdoberfläche (Entstehung der Alpen) wieder an das Tageslicht gebracht. Noch heute kann man Fossilien auf der Steinplatte finden.

Beantworte uns folgende Fragen (per Mail) ?

1. Wann und von Wem wurde es als Riff aus der Trias erkannt?
2. Nenne mindestens drei Fossilien die man heute noch finden kann.
3. Wie heißt eine der wichtigsten riffbildenden Korallen des Trias?
4. Gehe zu folgender Koordinate N 47° 36.685` E 012° 34.656` und sage uns welche Farbe und Beschaffenheit der Kalkstein hier hat? (Schichtung der Sedimente)

Die Fragen können alle vor Ort gelöst werden, indem man die kostenlose Ausstellung „Trias-Park“aufmerksam besichtigt.
