Geocache Description:

****** CONGRATULATIONS TO WING-IT FOR FTF******

At Evergreen Cemetery on Green Hill Road in Killingworth. Hours are dawn to dusk.

“If we could talk to the animals, just imagine it, chatting to a chimp in chimpanzee…” Many of us remember this catchy tune from the movie “Dr. Dolittle”. The film was based on a series of books written by the British author Hugh Lofting about a kindly veterinarian who could talk to animals.

Lofting was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England on January 14, 1886 and grew up telling stories to his siblings. He served in the trenches of France during World War I, incurring a serious injury while there. The seeds of the Dr. Dolittle stories were planted in simply illustrated letters he wrote to his children as a way of coping with the horrors he saw. After the war, he and his wife moved to Killingworth, Connecticut where he wrote one Doctor Dolittle book a year between 1922 and 1928. His second book, The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle, won the prestigious Newbery Medal (in the second year of the prize’s existence). At the ceremonies, Lofting was asked about the inspiration for Dr. Dolittle. He replied that at the front he was so impressed with the behavior of horses and mules under fire that he invented the little doctor to do for them what was not and could not be done in real life. Lofting died in Topanga, California, at the age of 61. A wonderful web site dedicated to the author and his works can be found at //members.tripod.com/~Puddleby/author.html.

On your way to the cache, be sure to visit the graves of Hugh Lofting, his wife, and son in the far corner of the cemetery. The house where they lived, a private residence, is said to be still standing across the street from the cemetery. You will be looking for a medium lock and lock. Make sure the lid is on securely and please rehide as found.
