Geocache Description:

This is a ongoing upgrade of a new Park in Langley. It offers flat gravel trails that are wheel chair accessible but the cache would be hard to get to from a wheel chair without some help. There is a bridge over the small creek running through the park. There are several lookouts to view the area.

Please do not place trackables in this cache. They appear to keep on going missing.

NOTE: There is now access from Fraser Highway. You will also be able to get the cache at that end as well. Posted Nov 17 2012.;

A long-serving Township of Langley employee who loved trees and was dedicated to preserving parkland has been commemorated in a very fitting way. On Saturday, October 4, 2008 12 hectares of property between 56 Avenue and the Fraser Highway was officially named the Derek Doubleday Arboretum. A total of 150 native evergreen and deciduous trees were planted for the event, which was attended by a large crowd of Derek’s family and friends, former coworkers and neighbours, elected officials and members of the community.

Derek was a municipal clerk, clerk/administrator, and administrator who served with six mayors between the years 1948 to 1983. He preferred to stay in the background, but loved trees and green space, and was proud to be involved with preserving the Milner Valley as an agricultural entity and acquiring land for park space. After 35 years of service to the municipality, Derek retired on his 60th birthday, leaving a legacy of commitment and cooperation with many organizations he worked with.

Derek passed away in White Rock on October, 2003, at the age of 80. His wife, Gloria, addressed the crowd during the Arboretum dedication, and thanked Township of Langley Council and staff for their work on the new green space. She and was joined by her son David, his wife, and their two children in unveiling the signage and planting the 150th tree at the Arboretum.

The Derek Doubleday Arboretum features a public trail constructed by the Township’s Parks Design and Development Department, which worked with a group of community representatives to develop a preliminary concept plan for the Arboretum. The site will also house a sustainable horticultural centre in the future.

The above was taken from the Township of Langley website.

I have watched the work on this Park take place over the summer of 2008 and walked through it recently.

One can walk this park and see Eagles and Hawks and Blue herons to name just a few of the many types of birds you may see in this Park near the Nicomekl River that runs through here.

I have placed a Micro Cache (GC1H0X9) at one end of the Park and a Lock and Lock at the other end to try and encourage you to walk this park. The total walk from the Church parking lot to the this cache is about 1.4km.

The Park can flood with heavy rains and thus make it difficult to use the path to get from one end to the other.

This cache's original contents were a small lock and lock that contains a logbook, pencil and a FTF Pin that I recycled from one of my FTF, a pin from the Township of Langley and a few other swag items.
It also contains a surprise for the FTF that I hope you enjoy after the find. No it isn't a key to a new car.

Congratulations to Professor P. and Groovy Owl for being FTF. While this was close to where I live they had a good chance knowing they would not have to worry about me on this FTF.

As of Nov 11 2012 there is a new memorial to all those Canadians that died in Afghanistan. You will find many new chairs along the path where you can just enjoy the park.

The Rotary Club of Langley has a Interpretative Centre in the park for rent. The Picnic Shelter now has to be reserved to use it.
