Ein EarthCache über die Entstehung des Taunus und seine Gesteine.
Wir möchten euch mit unserem ersten Taunus-Earthcache eine Einführung in die Entstehung und Entwicklung unseres Mittelgebirges geben. Dazu eignet sich unserer Meinung nach der im Jahre 2004 fertig gestellte „Geo- Erlebnispfad Oberjosbach“ sehr gut. Denn nicht nur, dass er auf 10 großen Informationstafeln die Entstehungsgeschichte des Taunus vermittelt, er verläuft auch auf der Naht zweier Kontinente, deren Kollisionsgeschichte unsere Taunuslandschaft intensiv mitgestaltet hat.
Der Taunus ist uralt, genauer gesagt 380 Millionen Jahre alt, und damit 300 Millionen Jahre älter als die Alpen. Ein beharrlicher Zeuge seines enormen Alters ist der Taunusquarzit. Mit 95% Quarzgehalt war und ist er widerstandsfähig genug, um Verwitterung und Abtragung zu trotzen. Heute präsentiert er sich darum als markante Felsklippenformation, so als Alter Stein bei Taunusstein Hahn, als Hohler Stein in Oberjosbach, als Elisabethenstein im Wald bei Bad Homburg. Damals, das war vor 410 Millionen Jahren, bildete er einen strahlend weißen Strand vor der tropischen Küste Avalonias.

An Earthcache about the emergence of the Taunus and its stones.
With our first Taunus Earthcache we want to give you an introduction to the emergence and formation of our Central Mountains. We consider the "Geo Adventure Track Oberjosbach", that was developed in 2004, to be very appropriate for that. On ten large information boards the history of the development of the Taunus is shown. Furthermore the track is on the seam between two continents, whose collision took a major part in forming the Taunus landscape.
The Taunus is very old, more precisely, 380 million years old, and 300 million years older than the Alps. An insistent witness of its enormous age is the Taunus quartzite. With 95% quartz content it has been tough enough to defy alteration and erosion. So today it forms impressive cliffs, such as “Alter Stein“ in Taunusstein Hahn, as “Hohler Stein” in Oberjosbach, as “Elisabethenstein” in the forest near Bad Homburg. In fact 410 million years ago, the Taunus quartzite was a white beach at the coast of tropical “Avalonias”.
