Black Sands

This is one of what will ultimately be 20
caches that will take you on a loop from Colville, north on Aladdin
Road, up near the Canadian border on Deep Lake Boundary road, then
around through Northport and Kettle Falls, eventually ending back
up in Colville. There may be a few side trips along the way but you
should be able to complete the entire loop in a day with no
problem. Not all of caches will be placed and active at the same
time. We will get them done as quickly as we can.
You can not use this road if you have a low
clearance vehicle! When you first start down the hill there is a
standard railroad crossing but then the dirt road becomes quite
rough. This is probably the only exception to the "easy" to get to
caches of the Scenic Loop... If you have a low clearance vehicle
you will have to park up on the highway and hike your way down to
the sands.
This area on the Columbia River is known for
its "black sand". It is quite deep in areas along this rock
outcropping. Where did it come from? You geology buffs can fill us
all in with your log entries. Some great picture spots from here
showing not only the great outcroppings of rock but depending on
the time of year the sandbars and river rock.
This cache is actually NOT hidden in the sand
or along the shoreline. It is back in the tree area. It will be my
typical camo tape covered container.
As I indicated before this road is not for
low clearance vehicles... If heading south the right turn at the
waypoint below is also extremely sharp and you should probably go
past it and use the pullout just ahead to the left as a turn
around.
