This 8L cache is located just off the Carey's Creek Walking Track
north west of Dunedin and just inland from Waitati.
There are multiple access ways to this cache. The easiest and the
way I suggest is to park at the car park at the top of the Double
Hill Road - the same park you would access the "Dammed for
Seacliff" cache from.
Walking times to this cache can vary between one hours if your fit
and much longer if your out on a leisurely stroll.
The cache is a 8L old yogurt pail, camo painted and in some scrub.
When placed the cache contained along with a logbook, pencils and
pencil sharper; a Ubuntu Hardy Install Disk, two small micro caches
and various other trades including two Travel Bugs.
Accuracy when placed was 10m and GPS reception can be a problem in
the gully due to the steep valley sides.
The creek walkway follows the Carey's Creek Pipeline that ran from
the Black Gully Dam (which you can visit on the way to the cache)
to Seacliff Hospital. However due to the moving land and slips the
pipeline was abandoned in 1949.
For the kids there is freshwater crayfish (Koura) in the creek and
several crossing points provide plenty of rocks to turn over and
watch the crays swim away quickly. See
http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/native-animals/invertebrates/crayfish-koura/
for more information.
