Åfosstien del 2, Skjellbanken
Ved istidens slutt, 10000 år siden, lå dette området 120 meter
lavere enn i dag på grunn av istyngden. Da isen forsvant, hevet
landet seg. Landhevingen gikk ganske raskt de første årtusen, ca. 5
cm pr år.
Skjellbanken på Åfoss (39moh) viser at det her var en lokal
opphopning av skjell i strandnivå da havet sto inn hit for
7000-8000 år siden.
I dag er landhevingen 2-3 mm pr år.
Skjellbanken består av skjellarter som trives i områder med lav
temperatur, slik som det er på Grønland nå. Skjellene består av
rein kalk, det samme stoffet som er i eggeskall. Derfor ble sand
herfra gitt til hønene for at eggene skulle få et sterkere
skall.
Under krigen rodde guttunger fra Bakken opp hit og hentet
skjellsand, som de solgte for noen øre til folk som hadde
høner.

At the end the ice age, 10,000 years ago, this area was 120 meters
lower than today because of isweight. When the ice disappeared,
highlighted the country itself. Land salvaging went fairly quickly
the first millennium, ca. 5 cm per year.
"Skjellbanken" on Åfoss (39moh) shows that this was a local
accumulation of shellfish in the beach when the sea level was the
here of 7000-8000 years ago.
Today, the country raising 2-3 mm per year.
"Skjellbanken" consists of shellfish species that thrive in areas
with low temperature, as it is in Greenland now. Mussels consists
of pure limestone, the same substance that is in eggeshell.
Therefore, the sand here given to chickens for eggs would have a
stronger shell.
During the war kid from Bakken in a rowboat up here and taken
shellsand, which they sold for a few cents to people who had
chickens.
