The cache was inspired by eleven old post cards I found of Johnsondale. These post cards are from the late 40's or early 50's. They show Johnsondale as a lumber town. It had a Elementary School, a Company Commissary and even a Company Hospital. Are these buildings still there today?? We were only able to find the Elementary School and the Company Commissary. We were told the Company Hospital was no longer there... but then again, those who were considered old timers did not recognize the building.
Today the Elementary School is the Activity Center and the Company Commissary is the Dining Hall. The old Log Pond is a lake for fishing and light boating.
Today all of Johnsondale is privately owned. It is owned by R-Ranch. We met with the property manager and were allowed to see this fine old lumber camp. Many of the original cabins are still in use today. The town is a type of time-share property.
These original post cards are in the cache and should remain for others to view and enjoy. They are a piece right out of history. We also added a pamphlet on the "History of Johnsondale". Feel free to take it or you can pick one up at the General Store in Johnsondale.
The roads to Johnsondale are full of many twists and turns. If you or anyone in your party are prone to car sickness, be forewarned. Carry an extra bag or make plenty of stops along to way to get air and enjoy all the wonderful scenery. You won't regret your day in the mountains one bit.
The cache is located outside of the town on a bluff overlooking the whole area.
Update 8/1/09 The original cache was muggled. Unfortunately the post cards of Johnsdale are now gone forever.
We replaced the cache today in its original location. PLEASE replace the cache in the exact manner in which it is found. Thank You
