According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles (93.8 km²), of which, 36.0 square miles (93.3 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²) of it (0.58%) is water.

History

The town is believed to be named for Gen. Robert Monckton.

MONKTON, situated in the northern part of Addison county, is bounded north by Hinesburg in Chittenden county; east by Starksboro; south by Bristol and New Haven, and west by Ferrisburgh. The surface is very mountainous, the principal elevation being Hogback Mountain, which extends across nearly the whole eastern portion of the town from north to south. The western part of the town is drained by Little Otter Creek (and its tributaries), as it flows northwest through Ferrisburgh into the lake. The principal stream in the eastern part is Pond Brook, which rises in Bristol Pond, in the north part of Bristol, and flows north into Hinesburg. The scenery of the town is varied and Picturesque, while the hills and mountains are filled with innumerable natural curiosities, among which is a huge cavern in the northwest part of the town. The orifice which forms the entrance is at the bottom of a chasm in the rocks on a side hill. It contains two apartments, one of which is about thirty feet length by sixteen wide.

Monkton was chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth on the 24th of June, 1762, and contained an area Of 24,000 acres, divided into seventy shares.

Demographics

As for the cache: When you arrive at the published coordinates, you will find yourself at our dual purpose facility, housing two entities.

The north wall of this building has a door. At the left side of the door is a green number plate with four digits.

To get to stage two, add 10784 to this number for north decimal minutes and add 4778 for west.

Once at stage two, you are across the street from what will one day be our civic center, to be located at Morse Park.

Here is a "dry hydrant" used by the Fire Dept to obtain water when we need it. We do not have a public water system here, even downtown, so there are several of these around town.

You should see another green address plate with a four digit number. Add 11172 to get north, add 5612 to get west.

Now head to the final. This is a different container than you have seen before, guaranteed. You can park in the adjacent driveway, stop and visit us if we're home!
