Geocache Description:

The cache is a small plastic container, hidden on the mountain side close to Pen Twyn Mawr ; it can be accessed as a detour off the Black Mountains ridge walk or from the Grwyne Fechan valley road. Parking is recommended for the latter at N51 53.955 W003 06.829

Westwards from the cache, on the ridge there is a small cairn and a memorial dedicated to the crew of “Ascend Charlie” which crashed here on 16th September 1943.

“Ascend Charlie” was a B17 (Flying Fortress) assigned to the 571st Bomb Squadron, 390th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, based at Station 153, Parham Airfield, Framlingham, England.

The aircraft was returning from an operational flight bombing the U Boat pens at La Pallice in France. Its No 1 engine was damaged and two crew members were injured when it crashed in low cloud, rain and darkness at 9:17 pm. All ten crew members were killed - their average age was 22. It was the first B17 and aircrew to be lost from the squadron.

A memorial plaque is situated in St Peter’s Church Llanbedr, and a photograph of the crew also hangs in the local pub - The Red Lion.

The co ordinates for the mountain side memorial are in the cache container, and the best route to it, is via a small track above the cache site.

Please respect the site and do not remove any wreckage.
