Geocache Description:

Located in an old state-owned rest area or "picnic area" that has been discontinued along busy Route 1A just north of Ellsworth. Flat terrain, very little bushwhacking, someone on crutches could probably get to this cache except during winter (snow) months. I've rated the terrain as a 2 because of winter snow. Please replace the cache with the "open" end UP.

During the 1950's thousands of roadside "Picnic Areas" were developed across the U.S. Many familes packed the picnic basket with food and the entire family loaded into the car for a weekend drive. The family would arrive at the picnic area and claim one of the covered picnic tables, break out the sandwiches, egg and potato salad, chips, watermelon, etc. for a terrific meal. There was usually a charcoal grill on a pedastal next to the table if you wanted to bring the briquettes and have hot dogs and burgers. Of course, you always had outhouses a short distance away. This is the decade that the Coleman Company made a fortune selling Coleman coolers, Coleman stoves, and insulated jugs for Kool-Ade and lemonade.

When fast food restaurants hit the scene many of these picnic areas went unused for picnics and slowly turned into "rest areas" where travelers could stop, stretch your legs and use the outhouse or "rest room." I, personally, never used the outhouse as a place to go and rest.

Over the years, fewer and fewer people used these picnic areas and it became a burden for the state to maintain them, so many have closed down. This cache has been placed on public (state) property, the site of a former picnic/rest area....thus the name of the cache. My original "No Rest For The Weary" cache was along Route 2 in Pittsfield but has since been sold by the state to a private owner and has been archived.

Most months there ia a pull off for parking across the road but watch for traffic. During snow months you are going to have to park along busy Rt. 1A so be careful. And since I'm placing this on December 31st I've made this one winter-friendly. Enjoy!
